Homeshake — Helium [Sinderlyn, 2019] — Over his first three albums, Homeshake’s Peter Sagar followed his own idiosyncratic vision, a journey that’s taken him from sturdy guitar-based indie-pop to a bleary-eyed take on lo-fi R&B. Now, with Helium, Sagar is putting down roots in aesthetic territory all his own. Питер Сагар а.k.а.

The Tiger Lillies — Devil’s Fairground (feat. Hero — Dirty Work (EP, Fool’s Gold Records, 2019) — It’s been two years since his last release, VHS POP, and today Calgary-born, Montreal-based HERO breaks his silence with a new EP, entitled Dirty Work. The offering is HERO’s first release with Fool’s Gold Records, and is fully written, produced and sung by the artist himself. Dirty Work follows a storyline of an emotionally self-destructive character slowly building to the realization of perpetual pain. The project continues HERO’s exploration of the underbelly of romance through dark electronic sounds.

cv313 — Glass City Sessions (Minimood, 2019) — The renown dub techno project CV313 present the new album on Minimood label, titled Glass City Sessions, hitting the shelves on the 11th of January 2019.

Old Sea Brigade – Ode to a Friend (Nettwerk Records, 2019) — из врунета: ««Первый полноформатный студийный альбом Бена Крамера (Веn Сrаmеr), более известного как Оld Sеа Вrigаdе, американского певца, автора песен и мультиинструменталиста, подписавшего недавно контракт с лейблом Nеttwеrk Мusiс Grоuр. Label: Nеttwеrk Мusiс Grоuр»

Marjolaine Piémont — Sans le Superflu (2019) — nouvel album « Sans le superflu ». Angel Metro — Dark Days Bright Lights (Not On Label, 2019) — Дебютный альбом американской девушки Энджел Метро из города Шарлотсвилл, штат Виргиния, и её darkwaveпроекта. Angel Metro, from Charlottesville, Virginia, blends the elements of heartbreak and hope to create an electronic sound nestled in Dark Magic. She finds her inspiration in horror, sci-fi, vintage Hollywood glamour, and high fantasy. Siti: Facebook, Bandcamp

Hama — Houmeissa [Sahel Sounds, 2019] — Nigerién composer Hama presents a groundbreaking album of traditional electronic desert folk songs, hovering somewhere between early 90s techno and synthwave. Nomadic herding ballads, ancient caravan songs, and ceremonial wedding chants are all re-imagined into pieces seemingly lifted from a Saharan 1980s sci-fi soundtrack or score to a Tuareg video game. With a deep love and respect, Hama effortlessly takes back and re-appropriates fourth-world ethnoambient music.

The Golden Filter – Dislocation (Agnes / 4GN3S, 2019) — The second release on 4GN3S (pronounced Agnes) is an angular and shadowy 5-track EP by The Golden FIlter. The ‘Dislocation’ EP is five pariahic pieces paying equal homage to minimal wave, post-punk, no wave, and electro, but retaining Stephen and Penelope’s inventive presence. Before ‘Talk Talk Talk’ became a 2018 summer festival anthem by accident, it was always meant to be the lead track on this EP. Like Siouxsie vs early Human League, but heavier. Originally available only as an extremely limited edition duplate at Rye Wax, ‘All The Way In’ is a jittery electro beat workout sounding as if Anne Clark were fronting Drexciya. Beatless and odd, ‘Dislocation‘ first premiered on Fort Romeau’s Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1. It’s Part art-piece, part word association, and part No Wave experimentalism. A mutating arpeggiated bass and an ominous tone drive ‘Cut My Hair’ into a incongruously sci-fi dark dance netherworld. ‘Temple’ is classic Golden Filter, with modular bass blurbs, soft vocals, and an 808 beat doused in analog reverb. Dance music to sit in the corner and think to.

Our Lady Of The Flowers (Rod Modell) — Holiday In Thule (13, 2019) — Rod Modell (aka Deepchord) heads up the Our Lady of the Flowers collective, debuting with a sublime consolidation of dub techno, ambient-pop and psychedelic shoegazing frameworks.

The Green Kingdom — Expanses Remixes (Dronarivm, 2019) — In case you’ve missed this masterpiece 5 years ago we prepared the new re-issue expanded with 10 gorgeous remixes. «As mentioned in the original write-up, Expanses was my homage to classic ambient and ambient techno albums of the past, albeit passed through the filter of dusty samples from old vinyl and classical records, the odd guitar melody, electronics and some soft rhythmic pulses. Since its release, the album has taken on a life of it’s own and also unexpectedly reached many more ears than I could have ever expected through some particularly fortuitous circumstances. It’s a slightly otherworldly, mysterious album within the TGK oeuvre that somehow continues to work it’s magic. I am very excited to now have the album back in print with a bonus album of incredibly creative and diverse mixes from some very talented artists, each of whom weave their own unique soundworlds. I hope these sounds can bring some peaceful moments spent within your personal expanses, whether real and imagined».

В возрасте 20 лет Шедид основывает несколько кратковременных групп, таких как «Маt Маt», «Lеs bеbеs fоus» и «Lеs роissоns rоugеs».

Mandolin Orange – Tides Of A Teardrop (Yep Roc Records, 2019) — After a 30-second bath of warm acoustic instrumentation, Andrew Marlin opens Mandolin Orange‘s sixth album with a few perfectly tone-setting words: «Just like an old friend, kinder than expected…» It’s clear, basically instantaneously, that you’re in for maximum comfort; Tides of a Teardrop is engineered to settle worried minds, slow the blood and lend an empathetic ear.

Lee Harvey Osmond — Mohawk (Latent Recordings, 2019) — In his 2017 autobiography Beautiful Scars, CanRock vet Tom Wilson wrote of discovering his true heritage in his 50s, learning that his biological mother came from Kahnawake Mohawk Territory outside of Montreal. Now, Wilson has continued to dig into the discovery with his fourth album as Lee Harvey Osmond. Titled Mohawk, Wilson’s latest under the moniker will arrive January 25 through Latent Recordings. Ten tracks in length, the album was produced by Michael Timmins and features contributions from Oh Susanna, Paul Reddick, Aaron Goldstein, Wilson’s son Thompson and more. Of the album, Wilson said, “It is my way of showing honour and respect to a culture that I’m just shaking hands with. My truth was hidden from me — I was born a Mohawk baby, and finally I’m becoming a Mohawk man.”

VA – AOR Global Sounds Volume 4 (1977-1986) (Favorite Recordings, 2019) — Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice proudly present the 4th edition of the AOR Global Sounds compilations series: 14 rare and hidden tracks, produced between 1977 and 1986 in various parts of the world. Started in 2015, the AOR Global Sounds series was born from the will of Charles Maurice (aka Pascal Rioux) to share his longtime love for the AOR and WestCoast movement and highlight its influence for many artists in the late 70s and early 80s. In this 4th volume, he selected again highly forgotten productions, deeply infused with Disco and Soul flavors.

36 – Fade To Grey (A Strangely Isolated Place, 2019) — 36’s music is often associated with and influenced by the futuristic, cyberpunk side of ambient music. His ability to transport and portray new worlds evident through his 2016 album for ASIP, ‘The Infinity Room’, or any of his self-released works.

Beirut – Gallipoli (4AD, 2019) — is the fifth studio album by indie folk band Beirut. It is expected to be released on February 1, 2019. The album is named after the Italian town where the title track was written. It is supported by the singles «Gallipoli» and «Corfu». The band will tour in support of the album in 2019. Work on the album began in late 2016, with Condon holding recording sessions in various cities, including New York City, Apulia, Italy, and Berlin (where Condon lives). The album is produced by Gabe Wax, who also produced the band’s previous album, 2015’s No No No, and also features Condon playing the Farfisa organ. The album was announced in a statement on the band’s Facebook page that also explained the timeline of its creation.

Unloved – Heartbreak (Heavenly Recordings, 2019) — The second album from The LA/Belfast based trio of David Holmes, Keefus Ciancia and Jade Vincent. Some thriller fans may spot it as the soundtrack to the ‘Killing Eve’ TV series.

As an artist often represented in galleries and large scale sound installations he has also had the frequent opportunity to work with visual artists from the likes of Tony Oursler to Julie Mehretu and Joan Jonas. Deupree has a long history of collaboration including early works with Christopher Willits and Richard Chartier as well as Marcus Fischer, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Bon Iver’s S. Carey. Fridman Variations is Vitiello and Deupree’s third release together and continues their tradition of exploring their unique form of experimental improvisation.

Cass McCombs – Tip Of The Sphere (ANTI- Records, 2019) — из врунета: «девятый студийник Касса Мак-Комбса (Саss МсСоmbs), калифорнийского рок- и фолк- музыканта и автора песен, чей предыдущий альбом Рitсhfоrk назвал «Лучшим рок-альбомом года» и то же самое заявила газета Wаshingtоn Роst в своей сводке альбомов, да и вообще все критики поставили ему, что называется, «жирный лайк». «Тiр оf thе Sрhеrе» записывался в студии Figurе 8 в Бруклине.

Fred und Luna — Im Tiefenrausch (Compost Records, 2019) — A mesmerizing trip from Krautland through Electronic Fields to Hypnotonia‒exploring the textures of haunting melodies, lucious dreamscapes and tribal, dancefloor-ready beats. After their highly acclaimed debut album “Im Klanggarten” (on Bigamo – label of Frank Wiedemann / Âme), this is Fred und Luna’s next fascinating step in their “Elektrokraut/Krautelektro” series.

Corey Fuller — Break (12K, 2019) — Corey Fuller is one half of the duo Illuha on 12k and Break is his first solo recording for 12k. A crashing wave, the breaking dawn, an impact, the crushing of emotional spirit… the breaking of a storm. These are all relevant ideas behind his choice of a title for this highly emotional abum. Fuller has addressed the universality of human struggle without going into specifics of his own personal waves. The ideas that we as humans all share many of the same difficulties is both a launching point and a message he wishes to share with Break — the catharsis.

Hello Meteor – Dusk Aquarium (Evergreen Prefecture, 2019) — Contains the addendum EP «Dusk Aquarium (At Night)» as bonus content as a Bandcamp exclusive. «We are tied to the ocean. Over The Rhine — Love And Revelation (Great Speckled Dog, 2019) — 15th studio album Love & Revelation arrives in time for 2019, the duo’s 30th continuous year of writing, recording and touring together. In that time, singer-songwriters/multi-instrumentalistsKarin Bergquistand Linford Detweiler (who’ve been married for 22 years) have built a vivid, emotionally-charged body of work that has won them a deeply devoted following and critical acclaim.

Helado Negro — This Is How You Smile (RVNG Intl., 2019) — Helado Negro returns with This Is How You Smile, an album that freely flickers between clarity and obscurity, past and present geographies, bright and unhurried seasons. Miami-born, New York-based artist Roberto Carlos Lange embraces a personal and universal exploration of aura – seen, felt, emitted – on his sixth album and second for RVNG Intl.

The Chi Factory — The Mantra Recordings (Astral Industries, 2019)The Chi Factory unfurl lushly overgrown 4th world drones, voices and field recordings made on a greek island, naturally drifting between time-slowing beats, FM radio interference, and languid instrumentation in four parts that describe a transition from dawn to dusk… “Dedicated to the life and work of Robert Lax (1915-2000), the American poet who lived on Patmos, Greece, as a self-exiled hermit since the sixties. Jack Kerouac called Lax “one of the great original voices of our times, a Pilgrim in search of beautiful innocence”. The Chi Factory would like to give special thanks to his good Patmian friends Ulf Knaus and Nikos Eliou, who showed us his house on Patmos (everything is still the same since he left) and also his favourite old wooden door (see leaflet). His great minimalistic poetry became a source of inspiration for the Mantra Recordings. His life on Patmos was far away from public attention — quiet and always surrounded by the skies, seas, cats and birds. Lax was a real dreamcatcher.”

Nоuvеllе Vаguе — Rаritiеs (Kwaidan Records, 2019) — Un premier album inédit à sortir s’intitule « Rarities ».

Golden Daze – Simpatico (Autumn Tone, 2019) — Los Angeles duo Golden Daze arrived in 2016 on a misty cloud of tape echo and dusty bedroom psychedelia. The project of friends and co-songwriters Ben Schwab and Jacob Loeb, the band’s affinity for subtle popcraft was apparent, swathed as it was in dense layers of lo-fi fuzz and late-’60s tonal cues. Three years later, the two return with Simpatico, a gently mesmerizing follow-up whose increased production values help to frame their songs in a more sophisticated, if still hazy light. Unlike many bands with more than one songwriter, Golden Daze unwaveringly present themselves as a single unit, singing together in unison or harmony throughout the entire album and keeping the focus squarely on their collaboration.

Teen Daze – Endless Light [EP] (Flora, 2019) — Endless Light, the next single from Bioluminescence, is being premiered over at Dimestore Saints. I also spoke with them about how 2018 was a year of refocusing for me, and who it resulted in the making of my favourite Teen Daze album to date.

Eli Keszler – Empire EP (Shelter Press, 2019) — The work of percussionist and composer Eli Keszler often feels like a tug of war between movement and stasis. On 2011’s Cold Pin, tiny, rapid-fire details massed into vast sheets of solid sound, like minuscule shells compressed to form enormous limestone cliffs. On 2016’s Last Signs of Speed, Keszler’s intricate runs and fills scuttled with the energy of a foraging squirrel, though drones tamped down the music’s volatile edges. Last year’s Stadium was his most groove-oriented release to date, its rippling cadences often reminiscent of drum ’n’ bass or hip-hop but smoothed by muted techno-jazz keys. Even when snare rolls rained down like soft avalanches, there was a sense of things coming to rest.

Applescal — Atlantis / Saints EP (Atomnation, 2019) — The two-track EP harkens back to a sound early Applescal fans might be familiar with. This time, however, the sound has evolved beyond its electronica beginnings and it’s club centered sound that came hereafter.

Cochemea — All My Relations (Daptone Records, 2019) — Cochemea Gastelum is coming home to connect with his roots. After nearly 15 years of touring the world with Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, the saxophonist offers a deeply personal album of jazz and indigenous-influenced rhythms. All My Relations¸ out February 22 on Daptone Records, is 10 tracks of mesmerizing and spiritually ascendant instrumentation.

Chromatics – Time Rider [Single] (Italians Do It Better, 2019) — To ignite the hype, they’ve also dropped a new song titled “Time Rider” that finds vocalist Ruth Radelet riding on a motorcycle that doubles as a metaphor for both time and death. “Can I take your hand? I want to ride with you into the storm,” she sings.

Naukograd (НАУКОГРАД) — Отражение (2019) — #sovietwave #retrowave #dreampop #synthpop

Lambchop – This Is What I Wanted To Tell You (Merge Records, 2019) — With ’This (Is What I Wanted To Tell You)’ Lambchop continue to establish themselves as forerunners and innovators of what was once called Alt Country. Their sound has morphed to encompass multiple genres, blending folk songwriting with the tones of urban soul. Following on from the pioneering sounds of ‘Flotus’ (2017), ’This (Is What I Wanted To Tell You)’ showcases Lambchop at a new peak in their career, whilst still retaining the ingredients of their classic albums. ’This’ is brimming with ideas, songs and hooks. A huge influence on the new direction is Matthew McCaughan (of Bon Iver and Hiss Golden Messenger), who produced and co-wrote large parts of the album with Kurt Wagner (Lambchop frontman) over a period of two years.

Howe Gelb — Gathered (Fire Records, 2019) — The 24th solo studio album from Giant Sand mainman Howe Gelb. Joined by a host of collaborators from all over the world, including Gabriel Naim Amor, Fernando Vacas, Juan Panki, The Lost Brothers, Anna Karina, JB Meijers, Kira Skov and Gelb’s own daughter Talula. Focussing on Gelb’s celebrated song-writing style, filled with emotive tunes and heart-warming arrangements invariably offset by gorgeous discordant moments.

David Gray – Gold In A Brass Age (iht Records, 2019) — his first album of new material in four years – alongside a seventeen-date tour of the UK for 2019. The album will be available on March 8 through IHT Records / AWAL Recordings, with first single ‘The Sapling’ out today. Produced by Ben DeVries, son of producer and soundtrack composer Marius, Gold In A Brass Age finds Gray in renewed creative form.

Light Conductor – Sequence One (Constellation, 2019) — Stellar transition from widescreen analog synth music to overdriven, motorik psych-pop by members of indie-pop bands The Bernard Lakes and Young Galaxy. RIYL Steve Moore/Zombi, Spiritualized, Panda Bear “Long time friends Jace Lasek and Stephen Ramsay formed Light Conductor out of a mutual desire to create expansive drone, ambient, and electronic music. After fortuitously acquiring a trove of rare analog electronic gear and meticulously restoring it from various states of disrepair back into pristine working condition, the duo began to explore the creative territories that were opened by their new musical tools. Using their mutual admiration for the celestial wig outs of Spiritualized, the quiet majesty of Eno’s ambient albums, and the experimental landscapes of William Basinski as a template, Lasek and Ramsay ultimately carved out a sound of their own, resulting in their debut album Sequence One.”

The Fire Harvest — Open Water (Snowstar Records, 2019) — You’d be forgiven to think that not having a story and not striving for success or money are goals in themselves. However, the four members of The Fire Harvest are just pure music lovers, survivors of a rich music scene that originated in the Dutch city of Utrecht in the nineties. “We’ve had no musical education, but have been around for twenty years. We don’t want prefab but prefer craftsmanship – and we really enjoy making music just because it keeps on changing and with every step we want to improve ourselves.” thus Singer/Guitarist Gerben. The basis for ‘Open Water’ are conversations on tour in Germany that he has made into lyrics. The songs sometimes hint at social criticism, but more often end up quite personal, like the family story of the resistance weapon that is lying in a cabinet somewhere. Details remain unknown and unspecified – much like the music itself tempts the imagination. The nature of the stories which lurk behind the eight songs and whose lives they reflect upon is entirely up to you to decide.

Kokoroko — Kokoroko (Brownswood Recordings, 2019) — The EP is the group’s first proper introduction to their sound. It follows ‘Abusey Junction’ being featured on We Out Here, the 2018 Brownswood compilation documenting London’s bright-burning, jazz-influenced musical underground, picked by Rough Trade as Compilation of the Year 2018, and praised by The Wire, Monocle and the New York Times. Writing and performing as a group since 2014, KOKOROKO have played at iconic venues like Ronnie Scott’s, performed at Afropunk Festival, and toured in Brazil, Colombia and Europe.

Tunnelvisions – Innellea’s Cosmic Remixes [Atomnation, 2019] — Innellea crafted two beautiful remixes of Tunnelvisions’ ‘Imaja’s Drum’. Stripping back the original to its rawest form, Innellea build their remixes around darkened undertows and hypnotic synth lines…

Benjamin Francis Leftwich – Gratitude (Dirty Hit, 2019) — The announcement follows the release of Gratitude, which is the first piece of material to be taken from Leftwich’s third album, which will be released early next year via Dirty Hit. Gratitude builds on the foundations laid in the EP, and sees Leftwich bring more electronic elements into play, and darker, intricately layered production, whilst still maintaining the raw emotion that has resonated throughout his work to date.

The Caretaker — Everywhere, An Empty Bliss (History Always Favours The Winners, 2019) — Work on ‘Everywhere, at the end of time’ was all consuming as you can imagine. All work and no play, all work and no play. In celebration of its completion and only for a limited time* here is a surprise golden farewell. Compliments of the house. Offering you one last chance to raise a charged glass for those we lost along the way, for all the works, for those ghosts from our past, for our uncertain future and for The Caretaker.

The Caretaker — Everywhere At The End Of Time — Stage 6 (History Always Favours The Winners, 2019) — The final release from The Caretaker (1999-2019). The Caretaker provides closure to a 20 year-long act that has uncannily lurked in the shadows of so many of our listening lives. Clad for the last time in Ivan Seal’s specially commissioned artwork, ’Stage 6’ sees The Caretaker mirroring the ultimate descent into dementia and oblivion, using a patented prism of sound to connote a final, irreversible transition into the haunted ballroom of the mind that he first stepped into with 1999’s ‘Selected Memories From the Haunted Ballroom’. This final dispatch is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the most immersive and intangible of his two-decade arc.

The Golden Filter – Restraint (Dischi Autunno, 2019) — изврунета: «Лондонский электро-дуэт The Golden Filter, в состав которого входят Penelope Trappes и Stephen Hindman выпустил новую пластинку под названием Restraint. UNKLE, Cut Copy, Empire of the Sun, Peter Bjorn and John. @blog.soulplay.ru

Tunnelvisions – The Celestial Remixes (Atomnation, 2019) — Part two of the Tunnelvisions remixes include four incredible artists: Fort Romeau, David Mayer, Yør Kultura and Bawrut — resulting in a magical package showcasing a plethora of different styles.

Sonmi451 — Nachtmuziek (Astral Industries, 2019) — Belgian artist Bernard Zwijzen, aka Sonmi451, has for over a decade now been quietly making some of the most luscious ambient we’ve heard here at AI-HQ. We are delighted to announce him as part of the Astral family with this six-track EP — Nachtmuziek — sit back, tune in and drift away.

Fred und Luna – Im Tanzrausch [Compost, CPT5383, 2019] — new EP “Im Tanzrausch” on Compost Records, directly following the album “Im Tiefenrausch”, also on Compost Records, and previous outings on Frank Wiedemann’s label Bigamo, JD Twitch’s label Optimo Music and on Innervisions. “Im Tanzrausch” is step 2 of Fred und Luna’s joint venture with Compost Records. In direct connection to their mesmerizing album “Im Tiefenrausch” Fred und Luna come up with four hypnotic and tribal Elektrokraut/Krautelektro pieces ready to find their way to the dancefloor. The music of Fred und Luna has always been a combination and an interplay of both listening and danceable sound. On their upcoming release “Im Tanzrausch” they are focussing on repetitive, dancefloor-ready beats, not losing sight of their love for beautiful melodies, electronic soundscapes and their krautish background.

Mdou Moctar — Ilana: The Creator (Sahel Sounds, 2019) — Mdou Moctar immediately stands out as one of the most innovative artists in contemporary Saharan music. His unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar and have pushed him to the forefront of a crowded scene. Back home, he’s celebrated for his original compositions and verbose poetry, an original creator in a genre defined by cover bands. In the exterior, where Saharan rock has become one of the continents biggest musical exports, he’s earned a name for himself with his guitar moves. Mdou shreds with a relentless and frenetic energy that puts his contemporaries to shame.

Small Feet – With Psychic Powers (Barsuk Records, 2019) — With Psychic Powers, the sophomore effort from acclaimed Swedish artist Small Feet, is due March 29. With Psychic Powers was recorded over the winter of 2017-18 at frontman and songwriter Simon Stålhamre’s own Studio Kvastis in Stockholm. The album marks a move in a more experimental direction from Stålhamre’s critically-acclaimed debut full-length, 2015’s From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like the Ocean, which received praise from The New York Times, NPR/WXPN’s «World Café,» Clash, MOJO, KEXP and many more while earning Stålhamre positive comparisons to Neil Young and Jason Molina.

36 – C45 Dreamloops 1-2 (3six Recordings, EP, 2019) — I am pleased to announce a new tape series for 2019 titled C45 Dreamloops. As the name suggests, these are loop-based tracks, made for C45 cassette tapes. Each tune in this series will be 22:30 in length. These are slow, hypnotic tracks, that exist in their own time and space. You may be surprised how much changes over the duration of each track. All tape-related artifacts such as hiss, saturation, wow & flutter are both intentional and encouraged. Careful listening will be rewarded and due to the nature of magnetic tape, no two experiences will be the same. These aren’t for everyone, but if you have the patience, they might be exactly what you need.

Monks Road Social — Down The Willows (Wonderfulsound, 2019) — Curated by the Blow Monkeys’ Dr Robert, Monks Road Social is an ever-evolving collaborative outfit. Down The Willows is their first album release and a unique and special project of inspiration, friendship and craft. Helping Robert get there were some members of the stellar Monks Road Social: Mick Talbot (Style Council, The Who) on harmonium, piano and Hammond; Crispin Taylor (Galliano, Candi Staton, Push) on drums; Ernie McKone (Galliano, Marlene Shaw) on bass; Matt Deighton (Mother Earth, Oasis) on lead guitar; Steve Sidelnyk (Richard Ashcroft, Madonna) percussion and, of course, the exquisite strings of Ben Trigg (Dexys, Richard Ashcroft), Steve White & Damon Minchella. Weyes Blood — Titanic Rising (Sub Pop Records, 2019) — The phantom zone, the parallax, the upside down—there is a rich cultural history of exploring in-between places. Through her latest, Titanic Rising, Weyes Blood (a.k.a. Natalie Mering) has, too, designed her own universe to soulfully navigate life’s mysteries. Maneuvering through a space-time continuum, she intriguingly plays the role of melodic, sometimes melancholic, anthropologist.

Karl Hector and the Malcouns – Non Ex Orbis (Now Again Records, 2019) — There has been a compelling trajectory at work since J.J. Whitefield’s Karl Hector & the Malcouns issued 2008’s Sahara Swing. It articulated Whitefield’s lifelong love of sounds from the African Diaspora that include Ebo Taylor’s slippery guitar funk, Zamrock, Malian blues, and disco-fied Nigerian Afrobeat. Six years later, the Malcouns dug deeper on Unstraight Ahead by exploring the Ethio jazz of Mulatu Astatke, Hailu Mergia, and Getatchew Mekuria, soldered onto the German band’s love of Krautrock and trancey psychedelia as exemplified by countrymen Can, Agitation Free, and Tomorrow’s Gift. Non Ex Orbis, issued more than a decade after their debut, finds the band traveling further afield without losing their way. This 8-track set engages the experimentalism of krautrock as it meets classic German prog influences such as Amon Düül, Popol Vuh, and Embryo, and dark, trippy analog funk. Woven in are an eclectic mix of trance, analog synth, interlocking Afrobeat grooves, and ghostly, dark mercurial psych.

Dead Man Ray – Over (Dead Man Ray, 2019) — изврунета «новый студийник бельгийской альтернативной рок-группы Dеаd Маn Rау, образовавшейся в Берхеме, на юге Антверпена.

Ratso «On The Road With Bob Dylan» (Dylan назвал «The War and Peace of Rock and Roll”). The Black Balloon, Satan’s Little Helper, Paul Shapiro.»

Chrysta Bell — Feels Like Love (Meta Hari, 2019) — изврунета: «Криста Белл (англ.

The Mountain Goats – In League with Dragons (Merge Records, 2019) — из врунета: «У каждой страны есть авторы-исполнители и «песни из кофеен». Тhе Моuntаin Gоаts — не какие-нибудь новички, а сложившийся и любимый критиками состав, на счету которого с 1995-го года 17 студийных альбомов, включая новую пластинку «In Lеаguе with Drаgоns».

Damien Jurado – In The Shape Of A Storm (Mama Bird Recording, 2019) — из врунета: «новый (14-й по счёту) альбом американского певца и автора песен Дэмиена Джурадо (Dаmiеn Jurаdо) из Сиэтла, который является «легендой узкого круга», о котором редко пишут журналы и показывают телеканалы, но который воплощает в себе «настоящую тихую Америку», не медийного «лидера свободного мира», а страну маленьких городков, где все друг друга знают.

Lowly – Hifalutin (Pias America, 2019) — Denmark’s Lowly are set to release new album ‘Hifalutin’ later in the year. The band’s debut LP ‘Heba’ was warmly received, with their experimental pop coming laden with fresh ideas.

William Fitzsimmons – In The Light_ Mission Bell Alternate Versions [EP] (Groenland Records, 2019) — William has this to say about the new EP: I believe there are two sides to every story. And the story behind the Mission Bell record is no exception. The alternative versions represent a completely different way of seeing the story of two people realizing that there time together has come to an end. Above anything else I hope these songs remind you that you’re not alone in whatever pain you’re going through.

Boys Be Kko — Big Boys Don’t Cry (Atomnation, 2019) — The eccentric Tokyo based producer Ryunosuke Hayashi a.k.a. boys be kko joins the Atomnation family with his ‘Big Boys Don’t Cry’ 12″ — a 4-tracker that includes a big remix from the highly respected DJ, producer, and remixer Gerd Janson. Both artists make their first appearance on the Dutch imprint.

Black Flower — Future Flora (Decks Records, 2019) — With a hybrid jazz based on African grooves, Ethio-oriental melodies and psychedelic dub this Belgian five-piece creates an atmosphere where ancient and modern sounds fuse into a powerful, hypnotic and groovy sensation.

Jeff Tweedy – Warmer (dBpm Records, 2019) — This is a Record Store Day 2019 item. It will be available to purchase from our stores from 8am 13th April. Remaining stock will be available to purchase from this page at 00.01 20th April. Warmer, the companion LP to Jeff Tweedy’s acclaimed 2018 solo album Warm, is released exclusively on vinyl for Record Store Day 2019. Ten previously unavailable studio recordings written and recorded during the same sessions. As George Saunders has opined about what he calls the “sister albums”….”Warmer came right behind Warm — recorded in the same burst, motivated by the same impetus, overflowing with the same consoling ethos”.

Death & Vanilla – Are You A Dreamer (Fire Records, 2019) — There’s something about the Swedish city of Malmo that doesn’t add up. Named the “happiest” city in Sweden in 2016 (who gets the job of judging these things?), Malmo’s DNA contains a “none-coding” strain that reveals the city’s penchant for a world more studious, fashioned in a vintage era, telescoped by pop culture that arrives via the TV-approved bridge that connects it to Denmark. Surely, it can’t be the same place.

Work Drugs — Belize (2019) — songs by benjamin louisiana, music by work drugs. written and recorded on holiday in central america. enjoy the music.

Rupa & The April Fishes – Growing Upward (Electric Gumbo Radio Music, 2019) — So yes, Growing Upward is not your typical pop album, but these aren’t typical times and this isn’t a typical band. Rupa is a doctor and she’s spent the past decade or so administering medicine in some of North America’s worst trouble spots. She was treating protestors at Standing Rock who were assaulted by police, she treats people on hunger strikes against police violence, and she helped set up a medical clinic in collaboration with Lakota/Dakota people in North Dakota.

Kevin Morby – Oh My God (Dead Oceans, 2019) — On the four albums leading up to Oh My God, singer/songwriter Kevin Morby channeled some of rock & roll’s greatest heroes, calling on various phases of Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, and others with rootsy tunes that breathed with restless longing. The mystique of the songs was supported by fully fleshed-out arrangements and sharp, guitar-centered production. Fifth album Oh My God is a different beast, relying on loose thematic concepts and conceptual arrangements alike to drive its sprawling 14 tracks. Morby worked again with producer Sam Cohen (who assisted with the songwriter’s 2016 album Singing Saw) and instead of the dense instrumentation of earlier work, Cohen suggested some songs be stripped down to just a few spare elements.

Подписав контракт с лейблом Lеfsе Rесоrds, Тееn Dаzе выпустил полнометражный альбом «Аll оf Us Тоgеthеr» в 2012 году.

Deadbeat & Camara – Trinity Thirty (Constellation, 2019) — Thirty years on from the release of The Trinity Session, Deadbeat (Berlin-based Canadian producer Scott Monteith) and fellow Canadian-in-Berlin Fatima Camara honour The Cowboy Junkies’ classic with a magnificent re-creation that generally matches it song for song but otherwise imagines it anew (one difference being the new album’s blending of two songs on the original into “I Don’t Get It After Midnight (Medley)”). As sometimes happens, the project came about somewhat by accident when Monteith heard the Junkies’ enduring version of “Sweet Jane” playing in an airport and, reminded of how much he loved the group’s album, contacted the Junkies to ask if anything was in the offing to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary; replying that no such plans existed, the group gave their blessing to whatever Monteith might wish to do. Recalling a shared enthusiasm he had with Camara for The Trinity Session, he pitched the makeover idea to her, after which the two mapped out an approach that wouldn’t merely replicate the original but deliver a fresh spin on it.

Tor Lundvall — A Strangeness In Motion_ Early Pop Recordings 1989-1999 (Dais, 2019) — Rescued from old DAT tapes, A Strangeness In Motion: Early Pop Recordings 1989-1999 are some of Tor Lundvall’s earliest completed synth pop works which have remained unreleased until now. “For years I dismissed these songs as naive and youthful relics, but I’ve grown much fonder of them in recent years along with the memories they evoke” Lundvall says of the decade spanning collection of tracks, many of which were sketched out in his synth pop duo with Drew Sullivan, After The Outing. “Original One”, “Procession Day”, “The Clearing”, and “The Melting Hour” are present here as solo reworkings, originally culled from his sessions with Sullivan. The remaining songs were ideas originally considered for Passing Through Alone (1997) and its proposed follow up, provisionally and playfully titled Femalamania.

Radical Face – Therapy [EP] (Bear Machine, 2019) — I originally started this EP under a different title («Verse/Chorus»), because I wanted to see if I could write songs with standard formats. I’ve used narrative writing for so long that I wasn’t sure how I’d do going back to something more direct. I actually had a lot of fun, digging into my favorite eras of pop music for ideas (70s and 80s, mostly). But once the structures were worked out and I moved on to subject matter, the things on my mind the most were what I was learning in therapy. I decided since that’s where my head was at, that’s what the songs would be about. And this time, I would not use any stories to hide the experiences in. For better or for worse.

Field Medic — Fade Into The Dawn (Run For Cover Records, 2019) — Kevin Patrick, aka Field Medic, begins his first properly realized album, Fade into the Dawn, with one of the sharpest opening lines in indie rock history. “Used 2 Be a Romantic” finds its protagonist, the mid-level touring musician in a loud dive bar, defeatedly proclaiming “I need a cigarette, those fuckers talked over my whole set.” These are the first words we hear on an album rich with Patrick’s uniquely intimate style, one that blends aching narratives with understated humor and optimism. Along with the lament of the touring musician leaning on alcohol to get through a rough night, Patrick’s songs offer emotionally raw portrayals of self-acceptance, anxiety, and sweetly hopeful excitement. Up until this point, Field Medic’s immense discography was made up of raw lo-fi recordings, with Patrick sometimes going so far as improvising entire EPs directly into a four-track recorder. Still coated in a warm sheen of fuzz, Fade into the Dawn is a relatively larger-scale production, being the first Field Medic material to include lead guitar overdubs and to implement live drums instead of minimal drum machine rhythms. It’s by no means a slick production, though, with Patrick evoking some of the same shambling magic as Neutral Milk Hotel on bright songs like “Mood Ring Baby” and “Songs R Worthless Now.” Along with driftingly melancholic acoustic numbers like “The Bottle’s My Lover, She’s Just My Friend,” the instrumentation sometimes tends toward a more down-home take on folk, with banjo and stomping kick drum driving the joyful “Tournament Horseshoe.” He returns to the four-track for “Henna Tattoo,” a bittersweet depiction of feeling left out while watching others find love.

Ahmedou Ahmed Lowla — Terrouzi (Sahel Sounds, 2019) — Ahmedou Ahmed Lowla plays instrumental electronic keyboard in a style known in Mauritania as WZN, or in Arabic simply “music.” Born into a musical family tradition (his father is a renowned tidnit player from Traza), today Ahmedou Ahmed Lowla is one of Mauritania’s most premiere keyboard performers. Soundtracking lavish weddings in the countries capital, Ahmedou has earned a reputation for his evocative theatrics, accentuating notes with by playing with his elbows, or tapping the keyboard with his head.

The Budos Band — V (Daptone Records, 2019) — As menacing and unhinged as ever, the pride of Staten Island is back with their fifth full-length offering, V. Raw and absent of the modern technological trappings, the Budos pick up where they left off with 2014’s Burnt Offering, and finds the Budos expanding on the brooding, fuzz-fueled riffs, whilst harkening back to the Ethiopian inspired rhythms and percussive proclivity that put Budos Band on the map.

Altın Gün ‎– Gece (Glitterbeat, 2019)Altin Gün were formed by former members of Jacco Gardner’s band to pay tribute to the Turkish psychedelia of the early ’70s that they discovered and fell in love with while on tour in Turkey. Bassist Jasper Verhulst fell under the spell of artists like Baris Manço, Selda Bağcan, and Erkin Koray, who blended traditional Turkish folk sounds with the wild sounds of their day, so Verhulst decided he wanted to do something similar in the 2010s, using modern production techniques and synthesizers along with psych guitars and Turkish instruments.

Yagya — Stormur (A Strangely Isolated Place, 2019) — Known to many for his infamous ambient dub techno album, ‘Rigning’, Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson’s aka Yagya’s landmark release took us deep amongst the rain-drenched forest. The beautiful, slowly shuffling atmospheric masterpiece set a blueprint for the notorious style we now know him best for. Fast forward ten years, and the gently falling rain from Rigning has now intensified. Yagya has shifted to something with more energy, a more defined groove, and a growing euphoric state: Stormur.

A.A. Bondy – Enderness (Fat Possum Records, 2019) — is his first LP in 8 years. The album will be out 5/10 via Fat Possum Records. Auguste Arthur Bondy has never been one for the modern world. He once described his time in the alternative rock band Verbena as like being “an infant in a crib full of bats.” After that band folded, his solo records eschewed the glossy electronics and rousing crescendos popular in the late 2000s. Instead, he wrote unfashionable, blues-steeped country. Try as they may, placements of Bondy’s songs in popular television shows like “Friday Night Lights” couldn’t lure him from the margins, where he was content to play intimate rooms — just a simple guy with a guitar, a harmonica his only shiny thing.

Mac DeMarco – Here Comes the Cowboy (Mac’s Record Label, 2019) — изврунета: «Четвертый полноформатный альбом певца, автора песен и мультиинструменталиста Мака Демарко, выпущенный 10 мая 2019 года — «Неrе Соmеs thе Соwbоу». Total Time: 46:26 min.

Matt Kivel – Last Night In America (Cascine, 2019) — Matt Kivel is a singer/songwriter currently living in New York. Matt began his music career as a member of indie band Princeton, but pivoted to focus on his own material around 2013. Since then, he’s put out four solo albums, working with labels Old English Spelling Bee, Woodsist and Driftless, and collaborating with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes.

M. Grig ‎– Mount Carmel (12k, 2019) — M. Grig is a multi-instrumentalist who specializes in dobro, lap steel and pedal steel guitar living in Durham, North Carolina. His songs are beautiful, slow, wistful and lonely. The hazy, sliding sound of the guitars steep the music in nostalgia and mystery as these instruments can so often beautifully do. Mount Carmel is his debut release on 12k, an album close to his heart, he has this to say about it: I’ve always been curious in my listening, searching for something in music and sound. I grew up playing the piano and played the uilleann pipes in college, spending a summer in Ireland taking lessons. I ditched the pipes for the dobro toward the end of my undergraduate years and discovered lap steel and pedal steel guitar a few years after that.

Polynation – Igneous [Atomnation, ATM066D, 2019] — Polynation is set to release debut full-length album Igneous, due May 10th on Atomnation. The Amsterdam-based producer-tandem of Stijn Hosman and Hessel Stuut introduces a more cinematic, sweeping departure from the fine-tuned alchemy of techno, experimental pop, and ambient established on debut EP Allogamy.

Chip Taylor — Whiskey Salesman (Train Wreck Record, 2019) — 2016 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Chip Taylor has been writing and performing for nearly 60 years and shows no sign of slowing down. The New York Times says it best: ‘If you only know him as the guy who wrote ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Angel Of The Morning’ — you don’t know him! Chip Taylor is making some of the most distinctive acoustic music around today.’ ‘Whiskey Salesman,’ his latest in a remarkable string of recent albums, is at once both personal and universal. It is an album filled with timeless, intimate love songs — poignant, meditative odes to life. And drinking (in moderation) songs. Their spirit is perhaps best captured by the videos Taylor has created for each and every song (included on a dvd). Filmed at his own apartment and local bar, and starring his wife and friends, Chip welcomes everybody into his warm, heartfelt world. ‘Whiskey Salesman’ was co-produced by keyboardist Goran Grini and bass player Tony Mercadante. It also features master-guitarist John Platania (Van Morrison).

Oliver Cherer – I Feel Nothing Most Days (Second Language, 2019) — Croydon-born, Hastings-based Oliver Cherer is perhaps one of our most prolific, contemporary singer-songwriters and yet despite this, he’s always been careful to exist just below the radar, much aided by a variety of nom-de-plumes, Gilroy Mere, Dollboy, The Assistant, Australian Testing Labs, etc. ‘I Feel Nothing Most Days’ is his third album under his real name proper – his first, the folk-noir, ‘Sir Ollife Leigh & Other Ghosts’ (also Second Language), came out in 2014; ‘The Myth Of Violet Meek’ on Wayside & Woodland in 2017. But ‘I Feel Nothing These Days,’ turns back the clock much, much further — Ollie began to write most of the songs on this album (on a Yamaha 4 track cassette recorder) back in 1983; only now completing them.

Johnny Dowd — Family Picnic (Mother Jinx Records, 2019) — There’s never been a more apt description of Johnny Dowd’s mission statement than the title of his 2016 album, Execute American Folklore. Ever since his glorious wrong turn on Wrong Side Of Memphis, he’s been taking a chainsaw to the stuff. Last year’s brilliantly iconoclastic, Twinkle, Twinkle was no exception. His latest, Family Picnic is a homecoming of sorts. To Wrong Side territory. But if this is the sound of Dowd looking back, you’re in for quite a carnival ride.

Bill Callahan — Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest — Side 1 (Drag City, 2019)Bill Callahan has announced a new album, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest. It’s out June 14 via Drag City and it’s got 20 songs. One of them is called “The Ballad of the Hulk.” Find the tracklist and artwork, as well as his upcoming tour schedule, below. Tickets are available here. Teleman – Family Of Remixes (Moshi Moshi Records, 2019) — To celebrate Teleman’s recent critically acclaimed studio album Family Of Aliens, the London foursome announce the release of an accompanying remix album, aptly titled Family Of Remixes. The new offering is released on the 17th May via label-home Moshi Moshi Records.

Radical Face – Therapy (Alternate Reality Versions) [EP] (Bear Machine, 2019) — Each track on Therapy was written following actual therapy sessions and the entirety of the EP is designed to represent the various stages of “aftermath.” In addition to the EP, Radical Face will be releasing Therapy: Alternate Reality Version – one version will feature a more produced sonic backdrop while the other will be acoustic.

Space Daze — Too Mystical (2019) — All songs written/recorded by Danny Rowland. Mastered by Chris Hanzek

Lee Ranaldo / Jim Jarmusch / Marc Urselli / Balázs Pándi — s/t (trost records, 2019) — New York based producer Marc Urselli had the idea to bring people together who had never met before and let that meeting of minds create beautiful soundscapes. Film director and musician Jim Jarmusch, Sonic Youth co-founder and guitarist Lee Ranaldo shared space with versatile drummer Balázs Pándi for a night session at Urselli’s EastSide Sound studio in downtown NY. These are the unfiltered results. Absorbing instrumental patterns of cinematic sounds and improvised rhythms. No overdubs, no editing. All was recorded live and analog, produced and mixed by Marc Urselli. The front/back coverfotos were taken by photographer William Semeraro in Norway. That is why Marc Urselli gave all the songs titles inspired by Norwegian mythology.

Эта группа состоит из очень известных имен, в нее входят: Дэвид Бирн (из Таlking Неаds), Дэймон Албарн (из Вlur и Gоrillаz), Мани Марк (из Веаstiе Воуs), Дев Хайнс (Вlооd Оrаngе и Lightsрееd Сhаmрiоn), Алексис Тейлор (из Ноt Сhiр) Сhаrlеs Llоуd, Аmаdоu & Маriаm, Jаmiе Lidеll, Рhаrоаh Sаndеrs, Jоshuа Rеdmаn и многие другие.» Label: Сitу Slаng. Total Time: 40:34 min.

Sufjan Stevens – Love Yourself / With My Whole Heart [EP] (Asthmatic Kitty Records, 2019) — Sufjan Stevens has released two new tracks, ‘Love Yourself’ and ‘With My Whole Heart’, in celebration of Pride Month. A portion of proceeds from the songs will be donated to two organisations – the Ali Forney Center in New York’s Harlem, and Detroit’s Ruth Ellis Center. Both give support for LGBTQ and homeless children in America.

Chris Brokaw – End Of The Night (Vin Du Select Qualitite, 2019) — Boston-based Chris Brokaw has made an indelible mark on rock music both on his own as well as with his iconic bands Codeine and Come, and as a collaborator with Thurston Moore, Evan Dando, Stephen O’Malley and many others. On End of the Night, he leads a group of renowned players to create an album of entrancing instrumentals. Featuring lush, indigo-tinged arrangements of horns and strings, the album expands on VDSQ’s solo acoustic spirit, evoking a sublime jazz mood appearing as night passes into the early morning hours…

Bill Callahan – Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest – Side 2 [EP] (2019) — Bill Callahan, the beloved indie singer-songwriter formerly known as Smog, released his Dream River album six years ago. Next month, he’ll finally share its 20-song follow-up, Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest. Actually, though, he seems to be sharing it about 25% at a time.

Fujiya And Miyagi – Flashback (Impossible Objects of Desire, 2019) — The lengthy, varied journey of Fujiya & Miyagi has taken the project to all manner of destination points. With their Kraut-pop and wonky electronics coalescing on 2006’s ‘Transparent Things’, a lengthy period of touring led to the bold, lithe 2011 album ‘Ventriloquizzing’, it’s off piste eccentricities steered by LA based producer Thom Monahan.

Elephant9 – Psychedelic Backfire I (2019) и Psychedelic Backfire II (2019) — You won´t get your jazz much more grooving or rocking than Elephant9 on a stage. Already established as a vital live favourite on the Norwegian scene before their debut album “Dodovoodoo” in 2008, it was time to properly document this live force after five studio albums. Hence Psychedelic Backfire I and II. Recorded in front of enthusiastic crowds during a four day residency at the intimate Kampen Bistro in Oslo, “Psychedelic Backfire I” shows the trio in full flight while guest guitarist Reine Fiske is a vital presence on “Psychedelic Backfire II”. Reine has previously proved a perfect guest for the trio, both on record and on stage. Never one to fight for attention, with Elephant9 he´s a true equal given the opportunity to express himself both as a soloist as well as a rhythm guitarist, his interaction with keyboard player Ståle Storløkken creating some magic sequences. But you can´t build this sort of live reputation without a fantastic rhythm section, bassist Nikolai Hængsle and drummer Torstein Lofthus providing the necessary power and flexibility. Tracks are picked from all their albums, often given lenghty workouts with ample room for improvisation.

36 — Beneath The Lower Lights (Past Inside The Present, 2019) — is a compilation that features an alternative selection of tracks, taken from the ‘Audio Diary’ archive: «During the months of April 2018 to April 2019, I worked on a new project, which I called an «Audio Diary» documenting all the music I made over a single year. I have always wanted to do something like this, but time constraints and outside commitments always prevented it. Since 2017, I have been fortunate enough to be able to work on music full-time as my sole career, so I figured the time was right to finally crack my knuckles and do it.

36 — The Lower Lights (Past Inside The Present, 2019) — is a new compilation album from 36, featuring 10 tracks of vibrant, eclectic ambient music. These are carefully chosen from a larger selection of tracks, made between April 2018 and April 2019 as part of a year-long ‘Audio Diary’ project. These showcase the more energetic side to 36’s production, whilst still retaining that glowing melancholia, which has become the hallmark of the 36 sound. Tunes like ‘Galatea’ and ‘Midnight Helix’ unleash the full arsenal of 36’s synth capabilities, with an urgency that is quite unlike anything else in his discography. In contrast, tracks like ‘Future Love’ and ‘Minerva’ uncover new paths in the darker, more cyberpunk style, with a nod to the future and a wink to the past. For those who enjoy 36’s music at it’s most blissful, tunes like ‘Lahaina Noon’ will have you covered. If you enjoy emotionally charged ambient music, that demands your full-focus rather than something to simply ignore or fall asleep to, then ‘The Lower Lights’ is an album worth taking your time to explore.

Burnt Friedman — Musical Traditions in Central Europe – Explorer Series, Vol. 4 (Nonplace, 2019) — One of the most admirable characteristics of central European culture is its spirit of creativity, which makes this area one of the world’s most spectacular artistic centers. With such a complicated amalgam of races, religions and language as we find in central Europe, it is not surprising, that the musical life is endless in variety. Before the upheavals engendered by immigration policies , the introduction of 5 G technology and the gaining of maximum self expression, the separation of cultures must have been even more noticeable, yet now in the sphere of music one can see them drawing more closely together. This is especially true of an under-populated melting pot such as Berlin, where the sense of beauty is innate and one hardly meets a white male or a woman not being a painter or a dancer, or a musician.

Ahmed Ag Kaedy – Akaline Kidal (Sahel Sounds, 2019) — In exile from his city in Northern Mali, singer/songwriter Ahmed Ag Kaedy returns to the origins of Tuareg folk with sessions of stripped down solo acoustic guitar. Mellow pentatonic notes dance over plaintive vocals, intimate and close mic’d, endearing in their simplicity. Drifting from melancholic ballads and pleas for peace, “Akaline Kidal” is a politically charged and poignant recording for a community ripped apart by division and civil war.

The Blank Tapes — Super Bloom (Brown Truck Records, 2019) — ‘Super Bloom’ EP written and performed by Matt Adams. #1 recorded by Matt Adams & Avid Dancer at Arroyo Seco Studio in Yucca Valley, CA 2016. #2, 4 & 5 recorded to 1″ tape by Caster Black with Milo Segal at TUM in Santa Barbara, CA 2017, overdubs by Matt Adams. #3 & 6 recorded to 1/8″ tape by Matt Adams at the Sweat Lodge in LA, CA 2015. #1, 2, 4 & 5 mixed by Nathan Sabatino. Mastered by Paul Oldham. Photography by Cristian Sigler. Lettering and layout by Matt Adams. Available on cassette by Brown Truck Records.

Calexico And Iron And Wine — Years To Burn (City Slang, 2019) — Calexico and Iron & Wine first made an artistic connection with In the Reins, the 2005 EP that brought Sam Beam, Joey Burns and John Convertino together. The acclaimed collaboration introduced both acts to wider audiences and broadened Beam’s artistic horizons, but it was the shared experience of touring together in the tradition of Bob Dylan’s “Rolling Thunder Revue” that cemented their bond. Their metaphorical roads diverged in the years that followed, but they kept in touch and cross-pollinated where they could. But although they often talked about rekindling their collaboration in the studio and on the stage, it wasn’t until last year that their schedules aligned.

Bill Callahan — Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest (Drag City, 2019) — new album. On June 14 he’ll release his first album in six years, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, via Drag City. That’s the album’s artwork above. It features 20 songs, which are said to be shorter than usual, and he’ll be touring this summer in support of the album. Take a look at the tracklist and his upcoming dates below.

Azure Blue – Images Of You (Darla Records, 2019) — Azure Blue, one of Sweden’s most internationally acclaimed indie artists, is back with a stunning fifth album ‘Images of You’ and it is absolutely clear that somebody has fallen in love. Consistent with the approach on the celebrated debut album ‘Rule of Thirds’ in 2011, Tobias Isaksson set his main focus on the songwriting with tracks written on guitar and carefully transformed into warm analog synth soundscapes. Using his film director girlfriend as a muse, the results are heartfelt and romantic pop classics.

Anthony Naples – Fog FM (ANS, 2019) — Since making waves in 2012 with his debut, Mad Disrespect EP, Brooklynite Anthony Naples has steadily built his status as one of the leading lights of New York house, guiding the pulse of the club scene there with his weathered, lived-in vibes. Much of his appeal derives from his ability to blend precisely these kinds of analogue/hardware-based production values with the rhythmic complexity and sonic nuance that modern recording affords, pleasing fans of both the old and new.

Mndsgn – Snaxx (Stones Throw Records, 2019) — Album cycles come around about once every two years, but Mndsgn, aka Ringgo Ancheta, is constantly making music. He wanted to do justice to his prolific creativity, so rather than let unreleased tracks wither and die on his hard drive, he decided to put out two records ahead of his next studio album, and the concept of Snax was born.

Cat Clyde – Hunters Trance (Cinematic Music Group, 2019) — If Cat Clyde‘s first album drew similes of saloons and smooth bourbon, her sophomore release, Hunter’s Trance, takes turns pushing deeper and pulling away from the bluesy roots. “Like driftwood in the ocean,” she sings on “I Don’t Belong Here,” “I’m always moving with the waves.”

Sky Civilian — Open Door (Atomnation, EP, 2019) — After a decade of orchestral French horn playing, Maggie Thornton spent her first humble paycheck as a music theory teaching assistant on a pocket mono-synthesizer. Using only this synth, a piano, her voice, and an 8-track recorder she produced 3 tracks that set the tone for her productions to come. The focus was on vocal sweetness, compositional simplicity, and rich, layered analog tones.

Grupo Pilon — Leite Quente Funaná de Cabo Verde (Ostinato Records, 2019) — At home, in the islands of Cabo Verde, there was grog, or grogu, a strong sugarcane moonshine not dissimilar to Colombian aguardiente, copiously consumed at Funaná parties. In the diaspora, in Europe, there was leite quente (hot milk). “I can still remember the taste of the first leite quente I drank in Lisbon,” says Antonino Furtado Gomes, Pilon’s drummer and current band leader.

Ducktails – Watercolors (New Images, 2019) — Former Real Estate member Matt Mondanile’s bedroom-pop project Ducktails, has announced the release of his new album ‘Watercolors’. The follow-up to 2017’s Jersey Devil, was written, recorded, and produced by Mondanile himself from March 2018 — May 2019, and will be out on June 21st via New Images.

Total Time: 45:35 min.

Hello Meteor — An Unfamiliar Place (Evergreen Prefecture, 2019) — Hello Meteor brings his aquatic sounds to the Southwest’s wasteland prairies: contradictory lands of dry heat, electrical storms, cosmic thunder, torrential downpour, and flash floods. From the expansive deserts of Palm Springs and Joshua Tree, through the supernatural mountains of Arizona, into the wide-open red lands of New Mexico, and expanding to the vast flatlands, endless skies, and extreme weather of the plains. This album combines downtempo and cozy chillwave with the cinematic sounds of ambient drone music.

Nev Cottee — River’s Edge (Wonderful Sound, 2019) — The River’s Edge is a mythical place. A scene of tranquillity or the start point of a journey. Nothing stays the same. Life passes by. The river widens then retreats. The River’s Edge doesn’t exist… Nev Cottee is back with fourth solo album… ‘After all these years it feels like I finally know what I’m doing. For some reason I had this image of the River’s Edge in my head — a promised land where I wanted to be.’ The album oozes with confidence as Nev takes his low barritone vocal into new areas and — dare we say it — even breaks into song! The dream-like Waitsian lullaby ‘Nightingale’ opens the record, perfectly setting the scene. Lee Hazlewood inpired doomed love duet ‘Roses» follows featuring the mysterious Veronica — a Nicoesque chanteuse Nev discovered singing in the backstreets of Madrid. ‘The minute I heard her voice I knew she was perfect. She has an ethereal quality. Not of this world’.

Son of Ohm — Zeitgeist (Aumega Project, 2019) — The core of this album are live studio sessions with synths, sequencers, space guitar & looper. «Zeitgeist is an electronic album with emphasis on the electric guitar. The concept was the free floating spirit, direct and playful. The songs are based around sequences accompanied by live guitar loops, recorded on two track. Some overdubs were done here and there. I played drums on this one which gives Zeitgeist a special flavour. The nature of this album is much more psychedelic than the previous ones. It may not be everyone’s taste. But that is alright; this is where the Muse brought me and from here something very different may happen».

Blood Orange – Angel’s Pulse (Domino,2019) — new Blood Orange mixtape known as “Angel’s Pulse” is scheduled to see release this Friday, July 12 via Domino Records. “My new record is called Angel’s Pulse & I performed, produced, and mixed the entire thing myself. I’m calling it a mixtape,” Dev Hynes shared via an official statement. “I have a habit through the years of making records that I just give to friends, or on tape to people on the street, or no one. Usually this material is made directly after the album I’ve just put out. Somewhat of an epilogue to the thing I’ve made before. This time… I decided to release it.”

Work Drugs — Surface Waves (EP, 2019) — this is the second EP of 2019, as a precursor to the full length fantasy file which will be out later this year. It’s a mixed bag of singles, instrumentals, and unreleased material.

The Golden Filter — Autonomy (4GN3S, 2019) — On July 19th, London based Australian-American duo The Golden Filter will release their latest full-length album ‘Autonomy’ via their own 4GN3S imprint digitally, and on red Vinyl. ‘Autonomy’ is a fiercely independent album and serves as a testimony to the united couple’s instinctive DIY attitude; for 10 years now, everything The Golden Filter has done from, producing, mixing, releasing, to shooting videos and press shots is a sovereign endeavour. Here, the duo finds themselves at a point of fearless positivity and an unbreakable creative synchronicity. This is undoubtedly one of their most focused and ambitious releases so far.

Hugo Race Fatalists – Taken By The Dream (Glitterhouse Records, 2019) — Recorded at Studio Al Mare, Lido di Dante, engineered by Francesco Giampaoli. Further recording at Helixed and Soundpark Studio, Melbourne, engineered by Andrew ‘Idge’ Hehir and at Zen Arcade, Catania, engineered by Sebastiano D’Amico. Following Hugo Race’s recent excursions into world electronica (Dirtmusic’s ‘Bu Bir Ruya’ and ‘Gemini 4’) meets 21st century blues (‘John Lee Hooker’s World Today’), the former Bad Seed is back with a new album of modern folk songs, ‘Taken By The Dream’, a cinematic tapestry of complex emotional states illuminated by mercurial moments of dazzling light and grace. Recorded in Sicily, Taken by The Dream will be released on Glitterhouse Records on April 26th, 2019.

Caamp – By and By (Mom & Pop Music, 2019) — The sophomore full-length effort from Columbus, Ohio-based trio Caamp, By & By delivers a heartfelt set of country-folk ballads and open-road singalongs caught between the wanderlust of youth and the cruel slap of adulthood. Childhood friends Evan Westfall (banjo) and Taylor Meier (lead vocals, guitar) have been writing and recording together as a duo since 2012, and By & By marks the studio debut of the project’s third member, bassist Matt Vinson, who joined up after the release of the band’s two-part Boys EP in 2018. While the 12-track set hews closely to the folk stylings of previous releases, the addition of Vinson allows Westfall and Meier some sonic wiggle room, which they inject with occasional bursts of Springsteen- and Lumineers-inspired swagger

DBUK (The Denver Broncos UK) — Songs Nine Through Sixteen (2019) — The Denver Broncos UK,

Deadbeat — Jacks and Slow Dances (Visionquest Records, 2019) — This June will see the release of Deadbeat’s «Jacks and Slow Dances» EP on Visionquest Records. Deadbeat AKA Scott Monteith is a veteran producer currently residing in the ever inspiring city that is Berlin. No stranger to the Visionquest imprint, «Jack’s and Slow Dances» follows his 2015 release on the same label, entitled The Jacks EP. His latest effort is comprised of 3 originals that are perfectly complimented by a remix from Visionquest co-head Shaun Reeves.

Follakzoid — I (Sacred Bones Records, 2019) — The long-awaited fourth full-length by Föllakzoid isn’t merely a recalibration for the band. It is a multidimensional reconsideration of what the process of songwriting, performance, and creating a work of recorded music can be.

Fujiya & Miyagi — Flashback Remixes (Impossible Objects of Desire, 2019) — Earlier this year, Fujiya & Miyagi released Flashback, the latest addition to a 20-year discography that also encompasses 2011’s Ventriloquizzing, 2014’s Artificial Sweeteners, and their Impossible Objects of Desire EP trilogy released throughout 2016 and 2017. It’s informed by the machine rhythms of early electro and their youth spent spray-painting garages and breakdancing on kitchen linoleum, and is their funkiest release to date.

Iron And Wine — Live At Third Man Records (Third Man Records, 2019) — Third Man Records is excited to release Iron & Wine — Live At Third Man Records, which was recorded during his particularly captivating set at the venue in August of 2017. The LP is out today — purchase or stream it HERE. Armed with spartan set-up of a guitar, microphone and his minimal backing band in front of a sold-out audience, Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam ambled through his discography during this set, on touchstones like «Naked As We Came» from classic album Our Endless Numbered Days, «The Trapeze Swinger» from Around the Well and «Winter Prayers» from Ghost on Ghost. It was a heartfelt experience without sacrificing any charm, personality or gestalt crowd connection.

John Medeski — Mellotron Variations (Spaceflight Records, 2019) — A live concert album and film of original musical compositions for Mellotron — written, arranged and performed by Pat Sansone, John Medeski, Jonathan Kirkscey and Robby Grant.

Erica Russo — Under Water (Erica Russo, 2019) — When life takes an unsurprising and dark turn, it is often music that heals the pain. It was no different for singer/songwriter Erica Russo, who after suddenly becoming really sick in August of 2016, was hospitalized for five months due to an unexpected illness. She was told she’d have a 50% chance of surviving, and after a life-saving transplant, she was fully cured by the start of 2017.

Lloyd Cole – Guesswork (earMUSIC, 2019)The 11th full-length solo release for the British singer-songwriter features contributions from his Commotions bandmates Blair Cowan and Neil Clark as well as Fred Maher.

Not Waving And Dark Mark – Downwelling (Ecstatic, 2019) — Inspired, wholly unexpected collaboration between legendary singer songwriter Mark Lanegan and Ecstatic maverick Alessio Natalizia aka Not Waving — a timeless, modernist fusion of barrel-aged narratives and diverse, experimental backdrops, RIYL Scott Walker, Conny Plank & Moebius, David Sylvian… Following Not Waving’s stellar recent recordings with Jim O’Rourke, Colin Potter & Jay Glass Dubs, ‘Downwelling’ finds him in a striking Pas de deux with alt. rock god Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, QOTSA). It’s one of those rare link-ups that truly transcends the sum of its parts, with Not Waving’s rolling range of nuanced electronics acting as backdrops for Lanegan’s smoky barritone storytelling. Delivered in a husky but pliable voice that has come to define the American alternative rock scene since the early ‘90s, Lanegan inhabits the songs with a reserved presence that has served him well for decades, but which has never been heard in quite this context.

/dmoon.ru

The New Division – Fascination (EP, 2019) — Новый сингл сайд-проекта Джона (The New Division) и Джеймса Мейса (Missing Words) Digital Shades, записанный совместно с канадской синтипоп группой Parallels.

J.Derwort ‎– Bamboo Music (Astral Industries, 2019) — “I had the honour of remixing all of the Bamboo tapes that J.Derwort ever recorded. Most of my mixes were approved by the master himself during the last days of his life in Oliva, Spain. For ‘Eleven’, I sampled from his last live performance at Jazzcafe Dizzy in Rotterdam on February 11th, 2018. He died on the day of the release of our latest Chi Factory album, ‘The Mantra Recordings’, on February 11th, 2019. We will miss him, life will not be the same. Farewell soul brother!” Words by Hanyo van Oosterom.

Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors – Dragons (Magnolia Music, 2019) — Twelve years and numerous releases into their career, Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors are by now a seasoned roots rock act whose stalwart presence on the Americana scene continues to hover just shy of a legitimate breakout. An earnest and passionate songwriter who balances his earthy folk appeal with undeniable pop smarts, Holcomb and his crew have wandered into their share of respectable chart successes and high profile gigs without becoming a household name. Their previous album, 2017’s highly-regarded Souvenir, was perhaps their most appealing collection yet and they follow it here with the similarly engaging Dragons. In a bid to switch things up, the Memphis native turned to collaboration, hoping to gain a different perspective and add some new colors to the Neighbors’ quilt.

Jimi Tenor – Are We It (Studio Barnhus, EP, 2019) — Jimi Tenor & Freestyle Man, Finnish legends and everything-but-grey eminences of electronic music, return to Studio Barnhus for another four-tracker full of the good stuff. Deep house as done by professionals!

Ben Jagga – Hold on Pretty Woman (Hold On Pretty Woman, 2019) — Ben Jagga’s long-deleted sole solo release ‘Hold On Pretty Woman’ is the epitome of Tabansi/Taretone soul-funk- boogie-disco in its prime, and is very much a family affair. This is the first-ever reissue. Producer is Ephraim Nzeka (of Brother To Brother fame, as ‘Ephraim’), and backing vocals come courtesy of artists all with their own solo efforts out on the label: Bummy Olajubu, Judith Ezekoka, Zak Roberts, Eric Kol and Nkem Njoku (see the BBE reissue catalogue for killer LPs from the last two artists, in particular).

36 – C45 Dreamloops 3-4 (3six Recordings, 2019) — Part 2 in the C45 Dreamloops series of EP’s. «I am pleased to announce a new tape series for 2019 titled C45 Dreamloops. These aren’t for everyone, but if you have the patience, they might be exactly what you need.»

RW Hedges — The Hills Are Old Songs (Wonderfulsound, 2019) — Following on from RW Hedges Pop debut The Hunters in the Snow.. this one takes place in The American West of 1877 the year the phonograph was invented. Constructed in RW’s studio The Chalet a get away full of books and fairy lights out in a field in a no man’s land. RW and Luca Nieri sat around bonfires and wrote lyrics written on big spools of paper. As per last time Luca Nieri produces and RW Hedges directs the songwriting further towards his influences of 1930’s Hollywood.

(The Retrowavers)

Bat For Lashes – Lost Girls (AWAL, 2019) — is the upcoming fifth studio album by English singer-songwriter Natasha Khan, known professionally as Bat for Lashes. It is set to be released on 6 September 2019 through AWAL. It will be Khan’s first album since 2016’s The Bride. The lead single «Kids in the Dark» was released on 10 June 2019. Khan has cited 1980s music and cinema as an inspiration for the record, citing artists such as Bananarama, Cindy Lauper, The Blue Nile and film composer John Williams in an interview with The Line of Best Fit.

Adam Green – Engine of Paradise (30th Century, 2019) — Discounting the soundtrack to his 2016 Aladdin film and a 2013 LP of duets with singer Binki Shapiro, Engine of Paradise arrives as Adam Green’s first proper solo release since the relatively low-key Minor Love back in 2010. While the former Moldy Peach has since stretched out as an experimental filmmaker, visual artist, and poet in the ensuing years, his musical mode remains relatively unchanged since he reinvented himself in the early years of the millennium. His quick transition from jokey, lo-fi, anti-folk bard to slightly less jokey, retro-pop crooner came about in 2003, lodging him rather firmly in a stylistic comfort zone which he has populated from album to album with the distinctive lyrical oddities, offbeat humor, and an unkempt baritone that constitute his bailiwick.

Tinariwen – Amadjar (Wedge, 2019) — The story of Amadjar – the new album from the Grammy award-winning Tuareg musicians Tinariwen — begins at the end of October 2018 at the Taragalte Festival of nomadic cultures in the Moroccan Sahara. Following their appearance at the festival, Tinariwen hit the road and head for Mauritania, via southern Morocco, Western Sahara and the Atlantic coast, to hook up with the singer Noura Mint Seymali and set up and record their new album there.

Work Drugs – Fantasy File (Work Drugs, 2019) — из врунета «Wоrk Drugs представляют свой новый полноформатный альбом «Fаntаsу Filе».

J-Walk — Mediterranean Winds (Wonderfulsound, 2019) — J-Walk returns this summer with a new LP Mediterranean Winds. A deep set of Vangelis-inspired sounds plunging the listener into waters deep whilst leaving crumpled anoraks behind, before forging the sound into the soulful vibrations of the J-Walk world we love!

Lowpines – Struck Gold – B-sides And Extras [EP] (2019) — A collection of extras from the In Silver Halides album sessions, and other miscellaneous recordings.

Ruby Haunt — The Middle of Nowhere (2019) — our new album ‘the middle of nowhere’ is out now. thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it. cover shot by @niklasporter Facebook

Siamese Youth – Electric Dreams (NewRetroWave, 2019) — NRW Records is proud to present it’s newest signing…Siamese Youth. A very talented and multifaceted synth duo from Berlin, Germany who are set to take the Retrowave scene by storm. Electric Dreams is an album drenched Neon-Pop and infectious melodies. This is an album for all lovers of Retrowave.

Devendra Banhart – Ma (Nonesuch, 2019) — latest album, Ma, is a tender, beautiful meditation on the bonds that ties us together. While the title explicitly refers to motherhood, and several of the tracks specifically addresses such a person, Banhart’s concerns are more idiosyncratic and spiritual. A mother could be a father or a son, a planet, or a god. His imagination is limitless in the best sense and extends from one to one connections to being part of the cosmos.

Chelsea Wolfe — Birth of Violence (Sargent House, 2019) is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe. Announced on June 18, 2019, the first single, «The Mother Road», was released the same day. The second single, «American Darkness», was released on July 17.

Belle And Sebastian – Days Of The Badnold Summer [OST] (Matador Records, 2019) — Most of the things you can say or write about Belle & Sebastian are probably going to be wrong, except one thing for sure – they were and still are one of the best musical projects around. That includes any form of modern music you can imagine, because they have probably done it all, rarely at any moment dropping bellow their level of excellence. And those rare moments you can probably count on less than one set of your fingers.

Ebo Taylor — Palaver (BBE Africa, 2019) — Sometimes the most impromptu recording sessions yield the best results. That goes double if the music lies dormant a vault, forgotten about for nearly four decades. Such is the case of Palaver, an unearthed highlife album by Ghanaian music legend Ebo Taylor and his road band. In 1980, Taylor’s band was touring in Lagos, Nigeria. He made the acquaintance of Chief Tabansi of Tabansi Records, and the label boss asked if he was interested in recording an album. Taylor was, and his band stopped in, cut it quickly, and resumed their tour. The 2-inch masters were shelved for future release but somehow forgotten (no one remembers why) until the 21st century when BBE approached Joe Tabansi — the chief’s son who held the rights to the label’s treasures — with the intention of reissuing their albums. Tabansi asked BBE if that included unreleased material. When answered in the affirmative, he discovered the masters untouched, and a painstaking process of cross-indexing revealed them as Taylor’s. Palaver had already been mixed and mastered, and so the restoration project began.

Jonah Tolchin – Fires for the Cold (Yep Roc Records, 2019) — “I just want you to stop twisting the knife,” “My house is a prison, the jailor is me,” “I put my faith in you and then a screw turned loose,” “I’m broken now, I can surrender,” are just a few lines from songs on bluesy folkie Jonah Tolchin’s fourth album. Clearly this is not a feel good release.

Tunnelvisions – Channel Tropico (Atomnation, 2019) — Tunnelvisions are back with a 6-track EP: Channel Tropico. It’s the duo’s 3rd original outing since their first release on Atomnation, Midnight Voyage. The project, spearheaded by Raynor de Groot and Emiel van den Dungen, have noticeably extended their repertoire with divergent material. Percussive rhythms, shimmering pads, and heartfelt synth arrangements urge euphoria. Each track on Channel Tropico stands out their own way — it’s an EP that’s on rotation in many DJ sets and a must-have for both new fans and Tunnelvisions fans from day one.

Joose Keskitalo – En lähde surussa (Helmi Levyt, 2019) — On Finnish singer-songwriter Joose Keskitalo’s ninth album, En lähde surussa, he pairs a lush, folksy instrumentation with very Finnish lyrics full of cryptic mentions of death, apocalypse and romance. His raw, jazz folk melodies are rhythmic and tactile – and at times they’re reminiscent of the traditional Finnish tango.

Shannon Wright – Providence (Vicious Circle, 2019) — is an utterly distinctive songwriter coated in raw, indelible fury. Wright’s songwriting hypnotizes, whether she’s igniting her ravenous guitar, or swirling her remarkable trance-inducing piano, Wright’s intensity draws you in and refuses to let up, therein lies the real beauty of her music.

Nils Frahm – Encores 3 (Erased Tapes Records, EP, 2019) — Nils Frahm releases Encores 3 on September 20, 2019 — the third and final instalment of his Encores series. The three EPs will be available as one full length release titled All Encores featuring 80 minutes of music on October 18, to follow his masterful 2018 album All Melody.

Bombadil – Beautiful Country (Ramseur Records, 2019) — This album was written over several years and several places, but mostly in 2018 in Durham, NC. It is another mile marker in the long forgotten highway that Bombadil rides down. Drivers and passengers have changed, but the vehicle is still the same. Bombadil riders include Daniel “Cloudbow” Michalak, Sumner “Sumner James” James, and James “Racer Whiteside” Stacy. They all rode up front, but often just slept in the back on the bench seats. The hired driver was Scott Solter. He mapped out the journey, decided when they should speed and when they should swerve. We only picked up one hitchhiker — Kate Rhudy. She tagged along to sing and make fun of our old ride. Dolph Ramseur of Ramseur Records provided the fresh paint and endless fuel. James Abbott was the best pit crew we could have asked for. We rode hard, we rode fast, all the way across this Beautiful County. Jump Aboard.

Jerkcurb [Jacob Read] — Air Con Eden (Handsome Dad Records, 2019) —  London-based Jacob Read, better known by his moniker Jerkcurb, spends a lot of time trying to create a mysterious, Nick Cave-esque aura — a lovelorn, sleazy nightclub-going lounge singer. That character has been popping up in music quite a bit lately: It’s what Alex Turner was shooting for on last year’s Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, and who Father John Misty has been describing since “Funtimes in Babylon.” Hell, watch any of Jerkcurb’s music videos and you’ll get it.

Tiny Ruins – Olympic Girls Solo (Ba Da Bing!, 2019) — Tiny Ruins announces the release of ‘Olympic Girls Solo’, an acoustic recording of the widely acclaimed third album. Featuring Hollie Fullbrook’s arresting vocals and intricate guitar playing, the solo recordings reflect the sparse beauty of her earliest work. The album features some of Fullbrook’s most accomplished songwriting, recorded onto tape in whole l
ive takes at Auckland’s Roundhead Studios.

Roosevelt – Midnight Versions, Pt. 2 [EP] (2019) — Roosevelt remixes himself! After high profile remixes of Charlotte Gainsbourg, Rhye and CHVRCHES, the German producer reworks his recent Young Romance album for the dancefloor and his upcoming DJ tour.

Bibi Ahmed — Adghah (Sounds Of Subterrania, 2019) — Bibi Ahmed, head and bandleader of Group Inerane, is from Agadez, Niger, which is one of the most volatile, unbridled and dangerous parts of the world. Bibi was soon confronted with the oppression and marginalization of the Tuareg by the national governments of Mali and Niger. Just as early awakened his love for music. As a child, Bibi Ahmed taught himself to play the guitar before receiving his education from the great master and father of the Tuareg blues, Abdallah ag Oumbadougou. Marked by the experiences in the Libyan refugee camps during the Tuareg uprising, Bibi Ahmed and his band Group Inerane gave the rebellion its own musical voice, while at the same time making the rich tradition of Tamachek guitar singing accessible to a new generation of listeners. In February 2019 and in collaboration with Sounds of Subterrania and Lotte Lindenberg Studio, Bibi recorded his first solo album on which he played all of the instruments himself. This reduction opened up a whole new view on this quite extraordinary mix of Tuareg blues, electrified Tamachek folk and psychedelic Sahara rock. The listener literally feels the shimmer of the heat and, once one embarks on the path of listening, the differences between spiritual trance and hypnotic psychedelic blues become indistinct.

Hello Meteor — Dark Secondaries (2019) — «Dark Secondaries, a term used in the identification and classification of birds, represents the area that lies beyond memory and nostalgia. Our awareness held together by fragments of emotional, visual, and auditory input kept for a lifetime as stepping stones for a radiant mind to wander upon…»

Cocoon – Wood Fire (Universal Music Division Barcla, 2019)Cocoon met, once is not usual, a huge success with its first album «My Friends All Died In A Plane Crash», carried by the hits that became planetary (rare for a French band except electro!), «Chupee», cute but with a two-way text… (read the interview to learn more) and ‘On My Way’. The duo of Mark Daumail and Morgane Imbeaud, sailing in a silky pop tinged with folk (close to a Tom McRae — «Just Like Blood» period), has forged public and critical recognition thanks to its combined qualities of songwriting and interpretation, sometimes mutinous and sensitive.

Baba Zula — Derin Derin (Glitterbeat Records, 2019) — Art… it’s a way to keep sane in the dark times, to fight, to grasp at life. For Turkey’s BaBa ZuLa, art is their existence. It’s part of everything the Istanbul band does. As band founder and electric saz player Osman Murat Ertel explains: “Art is our language. We’re an art group” And on Derin Derin, their first studio album in five years, they create their art with beautiful eloquence and stinging passion. It takes wing and soars high.

Carter Tutti Void — Triumvirate (Conspiracy International, 2019) — third album was recorded in Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti’s Norfolk studio, with Carter laying down the rhythms over which Tutti and Void interlaced their guitar, vocals and effects. It sounds like the best thing the group have yet done, all warm blood pulsing eroticism and hypnotic, narcotic fizz.

SAULT — 5 \ SAULT — 7 (Forever Living Originals, 2019) — Serious shades of Santigold mixed with Tune-Yards humming off this little piece of stellar tune-age from SAULT. I have little to no idea about any information to shed on this band and have no idea how I managed to have it in the saved collection this week. All I do know is that it’s a three piece who are part of independent label ‘Forever Living Originals‘. As soon as I heard the first belt of the bass guitar at the beginning, I was sold. I grew up listening to Santigold and her extremely addictive rhythmic bass heavy stuff (especially her 2008 Debut). Tunes like ‘Shove it’, ‘L.E.S Artistes’ and ‘This Isn’t Our Parade’ rank fairly highly on my top tunes of the 00’s list.

Chromatics – Closer To Grey (Italians Do It Better, 2019) — is the band’s first album since 2012’s Kill For Love, and arrives on Italians Do It Better. It features 12 tracks, including the title track, which dates back to 2014.Chromatics’ next album was expected to be Dear Tommy. It was unveiled back in 2014 then heavily delayed after Johnny Jewel destroyed all copies of it following a “near death experience”.

Babybird — Photosynthesis (RW/FF Recordings, 2019) — It’s dark and beautiful; it’s strange and melodic; it’s not what you expected. That’s how the latest album from ’90s throwback Babybird, driven by songwriter Stephen Jones, has been described. If you’re wondering why you know the name Babybird, it’s because the outfit is behind the huge hit ‘You’re Gorgeous’ from 1996. This new album, arriving just months after the band’s critically acclaimed ‘Happy Stupid Nothing’ compilation, is something all together different. The blurb accompanying the promo for this new release acknowledges the fact that many people weren’t aware that Jones was even still making music.

Boduf Songs – Abyss Versions (Orindal Records, 2019) — The seventh Boduf Songs album is called Abyss Versions. It’s coming out on October 4th via Orindal Records.

Julie’s Haircut – In the Silence Electric (Rocket Recordings, 2019) — In The Silence Electric’, the latest record in Julie’s Haircut’s long history of sonic otherworldliness is notable for its deft balance between hypnotic radiance and extrasensory intensity, between beatific calm and palpable anger. «Yet it’s also a record which has arrived through a strange process of osmosis from a band confident enough to let subconscious and metaphysical aspects steer them in the appropriate directions. “We embraced the incidents, letting the songs guide us to their final form rather than trying to force them in a precise direction” confirms the band’s Luca Giovanardi. For all its divings, this is a collection of supremely confident and cohesive ditties that sees the deep-end diabolism and mantric intensity of the Italian-based band’s Rocket debut, 2017’s ‘Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin’ expanded into a righteous fury and incandescent splendour.

A Singer of Songs – Portraits (Son Canciones, 2019) — “No more selfies!” This could be the slogan hanging behind a Singer of Songs on each stage of the next tour. After almost 10 years of confessing the unconfessable with his ultra-personal songs, in 2017 he suddenly had enough. Tired of navel-gazing, he began to write portraits of the people around him. His parents who fight heroically against old age. His brother-in-law who introduced him to indie music with a pile of carefully made compilation tapes. A friend and her fight against cancer. The friend who fled from the war in Syria. These are only some of the stories a Singer of Songs delved into like a reporter to mold them into 9 intimate indie-folk songs. The album + book “Portraits” will be released in the fall of 2019 and will be accompanied by a tour around Spain and Europe.

Black Marble – Bigger Than Life (Sacred Bones Records, 2019) — When Chris Stewart set out to write and record his third album as Black Marble, he was newly living in Los Angeles, fresh off a move from New York. The environment brought much excitement and possibility, but the distance had proved too much for the car he brought along. With it out of commission indefinitely, he purchased a bus pass and planned his daily commute from his Echo Park apartment to his downtown studio, where he began to shape Bigger Than Life. The route wound all through the city, from the small local shops of Echo Park to the rising glass of the business district, to the desperation of Skid Row. The hurried energy of the environment provided a backdrop for the daily trip. When Stewart finally arrived at his studio, he’d look through his window at the mountains and the sky, seeing the beauty that makes L.A. unique — the same beauty his fellow commuters, some pushed to the edge of human endurance, had seen. That was the headspace he was in when he began to map out the syncopated drums and staccato arpeggiation of Bigger Than Life, an ode to his new condition and a shimmering synth-pop response to its cacophony.

OTTO – Over the Top Orchester (Bureau B, 2019) — Looking at the artwork for this release you could understandably be mistaken when forming a first impression, visually appearing as a long forgotten, artistically misinformed release of a substandard ’80s indie synth-band that didn’t quite hit the mark, eventually finding its way out of an optimistic fan’s record collection and into the charity shop reduced to clearance section. But just as perseverance is required to flick through the endless stacks of frayed and yellowing sleeves to unearth an ultra-rare disc of wax, OTTO’s Over the Top Orchestra obliges a similar approach.

Aquarian Blood – A Love That Leads to War (Goner Records, 2019) — When Aquarian Blood first appeared two years ago with their full-length, Last Nite in Paradise, they sounded as if someone had thrown a bunch of guitars and a keyboard in a blender, pressed “puree,” and started shrieking over top of the din. That album was a madcap batch of deranged carnival punk, every song shrouded in haunted-castle reverb. Anyone expecting more of the same for round two, however, are in for a shock: the first sound on A Love that Leads to War is an acoustic guitar plucking out a minor chord, followed closely by J.B. and Laura Horrell — the married couple at the group’s core — singing a grim, hushed melody. War is a somber, baleful record that has all of the muted, graveside tones of pagan folk — sonically, it’s a close cousin to the records made by Emma Ruth Rundle and Jaye Jayle — and the new setting suits them. J.B. and Laura both have low, deeper voices, and they blend beautifully, disappearing entirely into one another on songs like the ruminative “Hidden Away,” and drifting gently above strummed guitars on “Dogs In My Mouth.” Even a song like “Landscape Strange,” which spikes the punch with squelching keys, a drum machine, and some out-of-tune slack-key guitar, has the deliberate, moody tone of an elegy. The music brightens briefly for the lullaby-like title track, which appears late in the album, but even that song has death at its core: “Must be disappointing after the end is here/ the lights finally go out for good, the gates never appear.” In just two albums, Aquarian Blood have gone from the playground to the grave.

Fink – Bloom Innocent (Alternate Versions) [EP] (2019) — Fink has released two alternate versions of his current single “Bloom Innocent”, the title track from his new album, produced with Flood, which will be released October 25 on R’COUP’D. The Acoustic and Horizontalism Remix versions of “Bloom Innocent” are both available now. “Bloom Innocent” follows lead single “We Watch The Stars”, a Lauren Laverne ‘While You Were Sleeping Track Of The Day” on BBC 6 Music.

Get Well Soon – The Horror Live EP (2019) — Gut anderthalb Jahre ist es nun her, dass mit THE HORROR das fünfte Studioalbum von Konstantin Gropper alias Get Well Soon erschienen ist.

Ducktails – Hard Rock Cafe Chernobyl (New Images Limited, 2019) — This is a compilation collecting outtakes from Watercolors, mostly recorded in 2018. It also includes a lost trap related album made entirely in Athens, Greece (tracks 20-28) also b-sides, demos, and instrumentals. released September 29, 2019 recorded by Matthew Mondanile.

Andre Ethier – Croak in the Weeds (Telephone Explosion Records, 2019) — Toronto mainstay André Ethier‘s latest album is as peaceful as dew on grass. This nine-song collection from the painter and musical poet is a journey that deliberately avoids a destination, a relaxed freak-folk jaunt that carries a sense of wonder for the natural world and all its idiosyncrasies.
A former member of Toronto indie rock group the Deadly Snakes (shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize for their 2006 record, Porcella), Ethier has already released five solo records over more than two decades. However, Croak in the Weeds proves that there is entirely new territory for this well-honed, bold-hearted artist to cover.

Cigarettes After Sex – Cry (Partisan Records, 2019) — is a compact, near-on perfect collection at just nine songs and whilst the album doesn’t mark a massive change in sound or direction from its predecessor – Gonzalez always makes it so much more to listen to. “Cry” is a slow, sonic catharsis on sex and romance, of love and lust. The reward comes with repeated listens as each song stands up on its own merits – haunting and hypnotic.

Fink – Bloom Innocent (R’COUP’D, 2019) — Speaking about the new offering, Fink says, «I wanted to write a piece that was about a moment in my life where I wanted to be, not this guy, but that guy from a few years back. I wanted to see again the look in my partner’s face that we had in the early days – innocence and beauty and not tied down with life’s bullshit.» Fink’s Bloom Innocent album was largely recorded at Fink’s home studio in Berlin, and was later taken to London to be polished by producer Flood.

Marcus Fischer ‎– On Falling (Not On Label, 2019) — Marcus Fischer’s On Falling was originally self-released as a tour cassette in the fall of 2018. 12k is proud to offer this new version that contains the original release on side A combined with a 30-minute live recording on side B.

Coppice Halifax & Variant — Slow Earth Ritual (Milieu Music, 2019) — Slow Earth Ritual is a confluence of many different tributaries, running through the Halifaxian continent. It celebrates the hundredth release in the ABX subcatalog of post-Analog Botany recordings. It revisits, in sonic and photographic terms, the winding and tangential paths of Verdant Acre. It returns to the invocation of oceanic and forestial elements in the Coppice Halifax name itself. It is the culmination of a collaborative process with a close friend, confidante and longtime influence on the CH output, Stephen Hitchell of Echospace.

Sidney Lindner & The Silver Wilderness Collective — Summer Ghosts Nightfalls (Burst & Bloom Records, 2019)“Sweet brother moonchild / We’d talk til all hours / You told me about that time that you had all the power / You brought the sunlight / The rain brought the flowers,” Sidney Lindner sings of his late brother on the opening of the first album from himself with his Wilderness Collective. His haunting baritone, that rivals the likes of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, sets the tone for what turns out to be an ethereal set of songs.

Lambchop – Basement Tapes [EP] (Merge, 2019)Lambchop have just released a new three-song EP called Basement Tapes. It features a brand new song called “So modern and so tight” and remixes of two songs from the 2019 album This (is what I wanted to tell you). Listen below.

TR/ST – The Destroyer – 2 (House Arrest, 2019) — Back in April, Toronto’s Robert Alfons dropped the first half of his newest work as TR/ST: The Destroyer-1, eight of 16 tracks the darkwave producer was presenting as a unified set of music. Its themes and characters continued TR/ST’s familiar embrace of uncomfortable and dangerous feelings against a largely upbeat industrial-inspired backdrop. The second half, The Destroyer-2, takes a left turn from those sexually charged grooves, showing Alfons handy with a brand new moodiness delivery system. Here, TR/ST incorporates dream-pop and synth-pop to accessorize a line of artfully serious songs that suggest The Church and The National.

SUSS – High Line (Northern Spy Records, 2019) — is the sophomore release from ambient country outfit SUSS, and perhaps no one is more surprised at the pairing of these two seemingly disparate genres as their members. Yet there were hints of this fusion before. SUSS co-founders Bob Holmes and Gary Leib were members of Boston’s Rubber Rodeo in the 1980s, and they imagined what might have happened had Roxy Music rounded out its compositions with touches of Patsy Cline and Hank Williams.

Low Roar – ross. (Tonequake Records, 2019) — Great art has always incubated in human isolation. Low Roar-the musical vision of Ryan Karazija-alchemizes those moments of solitude into an album of glacial modern pop anthems. As a songwriter, Karazija has always understood that far from being antithetical to universality, honoring your personal experiences as unflinchingly as you can, is intrinsic to it. It’s a record about the sometimes uneasy relationship between physical and emotional distance. Ryan has made a habit of documenting his life in honest songs that can swell your spirit or break your heart at any time. This fourth album, ross., perfectly honors the core sonic ideals at the heart of Low Roar with expansive atmospherics and a soft neon pulse of electronic beats through which minimalist arrangements and acoustic textures move.

Molly Drag — Touchstone (EggHunt, 2019) — On Touchstone‘s title track, there is a stunning calm in Michael Hansford’s receding acoustic guitar strums, while his whispery vocals nudge us along a crooked path of contentment and hopefulness. Hansford’s Montreal-based solo project, Molly Drag, captures the lethargic serenity touched on by his past work beautifully throughout the seven-song album.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich — Elephant (Dirty Hit, EP, 2019) — Benjamin Francis Leftwich has returned with new single ‘Elephant’, the first piece of material to surface since his album Gratitute, released earlier this year, and is taken from a forthcoming EP due this Autumn. Where ‘Gratitude’ saw Ben embrace more electronic elements and bring darker production nuances into play, ‘Elephant’ takes him back to his roots, as those signature hushed vocals impact over an ethereal choir backdrop and delicate guitars.

Shook – Music For City & Nature (J.R.F. Wijnands, 2019) — n this album I tried to document my emotional and mental state at this point in my career. It is inspired by the conflict between the energetic and busy city life and the calm, warmth and peace that nature gives. It isn’t a city ‘versus’ nature album though, it is about daily life existing in a gray area in between. I try to find a balance by connecting both sides. We can build a future in the city, but we must not forget that nature is our future.

Chantal Acda – Pūwawau (Oorwerk, 2019) — When people hear recordings of their own voice, they often are surprised by what they sound like. Flemish-Dutch singer Chantal Acda is utterly intrigued by ‘the voice’. Not just as an instrument, but also as a means of investigating our world. At Explore the North 2019 at the Dutch premier performance of her music theatre show PŪWAWAU, she will take you along on a six-part journey in which her compositions feature her own voice and her chamber orchestra. An investigation into the universal features that connect or influence voices, such as heritage, language, materials and the popular Dutch songs about all aspects of life known as levensliederen. The electro-acoustic experience has been given suitable lyrics and video images created by Josse de Pauw.

Tindersticks – No Treasure But Hope (City Slang, 2019) — Three years since their last album proper, singer Stuart Staples decided Tindersticks’ return called for something special. “I felt we needed to be able to make something meaningful,” he says. No Tindersticks album has lacked meaning, of course, but these mavens of intimate, expansive mood song dig deep and diversify beautifully on No Treasure but Hope. Rich in intuitive warmth, lush melodies and an inquisitive spirit, it’s an album that casts a fresh light on Tindersticks’ core qualities, bathed in the glow of a band intent on rediscovering what they can do.

Toy – Songs of Consumption (Tough Love, 2019) — Toy‘s new record, Songs of Consumption, is an eight song collection of unique interpretations of songs that have directly inspired the band, and had some influence on their most recent record, the critically acclaimed Happy in the Hollow. Impressively, all eight songs were self-produced and recorded in home studios.

Molly Burch – The Molly Burch Christmas Album (Captured Tracks, 2019) — On this collection of holiday songs, Austin chanteuse Molly Burch does Christmas with a twist. Quite an omnibus, the album features classics like «I’ll Be Home for Christmas» and «Auld Lang Syne» alongside heartland hits like «Hard Candy Christmas» and «Snowqueen of Texas».

Emily Jane White – Immanent Fire (Talitres Records, 2019) — Emily Jane White’s sixth album «Immanent Fire» is now available for pre-order from the Talitres web store. Written over a two year period, Emily Jane White’s sixth album “Immanent Fire” recognizes our moment at the precipice of species annihilation, as she guides her listener through the feeling of life on a planet at the brink of destruction.

Milky Chance – Mind The Moon (BMG, 2019) — Milky Chance comprises of German duo Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch. There’s few accomplishments that the band haven’t already achieved with their first two albums, Sadnecessary and Blossom.

Minimal Compact — Creation Is Perfect (Minimal Compact, 2019) — An album of new versions of classic tracks by a classic band – and yet so much more besides. Formed in Amsterdam in 1980, Minimal Compact were part of the original post-punk explosion. The band developed a unique mix of propulsive rhythms, spacious basslines, rich keyboard textures, mesmeric guitar lines, and vocal melodies with a Middle-Eastern inflection. They sounded like nothing that had gone before.

Epic Rain — All Things Turn To Rust (Lucky Records, 2019) — Zimą Islandia zamienia się w mroczną Wyspę.

Helado Negro And The Smile Band — Live At KCRW (RVNG Intl., 2019) — Performed live at The Village Studios KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic hosted by Jason Bentley.

Sam Amidon – Fatal Flower Garden EP (A Tribute To Harry Smith) (Nonesuch Records, 2019) — a four-track 7” vinyl record from singer and multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon, is due November 15, 2019, on Nonesuch Records. Amidon first publicly performed the songs on this EP—all of which were on Smith’s beloved and influential Anthology of American Folk Music—for a concert commissioned by Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Belgium, as part of its large-scale Anthology tribute. Fatal Flower Garden was recorded over two days in East London with Amidon and frequent collaborator Shahzad Ismaily playing all the instruments; Leo Abrahams engineered, produced, and mixed. The 7” EP is available to preorder from the Nonesuch Store with an instant download of his take on Mississippi John Hurt’s “Spike Driver Blues.»

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – I Have Made A Place (Drag City, 2019) — GQ clothes-horse and man who saw a darkness Bonnie Prince Billy has his first album of new songs since 2011. This time, he brings the lightness, with help from a Louisville band including picker Nathan Salsburg, ex-Gary Burton Quartet drummer Mike Hyman and singer-songwriter Joan Shelley. Influenced by songwriters John Prine and Tom T. Hall and inspired by the state of Hawaii, I Made a Place finds Bonny using his considerable powers for good

ARP — Ensemble – Live! (Mexican Summer, 2019) — A special one-off album LIVE recording featuring a five-piece ensemble performing music from Arp’s most recent album, ZEBRA, plus four new compositions including “Eos,” “Kalimboid,” “Voices,” and “Autumn Piece (for Jiri Kovanda)».

Sky Civilian — At the Seams (Atomnation, 2019) — Six months following her debut EP Open Door on Dutch imprint Atomnation, Sky Civilian is set to release a sophomore EP, At the Seams, on November 8th. At the Seams is a stepping stone, from the lyrical, gentle, genre-agnostic electronica of Open Door, to Maggie’s own rounded and angelic take on acid-house. Her debut EP Open Door was “clean and angelic” according to Uproxx, “soothing, sweet, marvelously refreshing” by New Retro Wave, and “a glimpse into a kinder, more gentle future” by Queen City Sounds and Art. Her follow-up EP, At the Seams is a gleaming example of an artist on her way, a sonic Bildungsroman, if you will. A work of searching, and in many moments, finding.

Elite Beat — Selected Rhythms (Research Records, 2019) — Elite Beat is a musical collective from Portland, Oregon with a history spanning back to 2006. ‘Selected Rhythms’ captures the finest moments from all three of their ultra limited cassette series ‘Casual Rhythms’.

VA – Space Funk: Afro Futurist Electro Funk In Space 1976-84 (Soul Jazz Records, 2019)An intergalactic journey into black space, fuelled by funk, powered by computers. London’s Soul Jazz Records is releasing a new funk and electro compilation, titled Space Funk – Afro Futurist Electro Funk in Space 1976-84. Soul Jazz collected the rare electro and funk songs from small, independent labels. Its 15-tracks span from the infectious funk of Santiago’s ‘Bionic Funk’ to Jamie Jupitor’s futuristic, drum-heavy ‘Computer Power’ and the classic disco sounds of JUJU & the Space Rangers’ ‘Plastic’.

Issam Hajali – Mouasalat Ila Jacad El Ard (Habibi Funk, 2019) — “The completely unknown debut album of Issam Hajali (Ferkat Al Ard) fuses jazz and folk with Arabic and Iranian influences into unique beauty. Originally released in a limited run of 75 cassette tape copies.

Leonard Cohen – Thanks For The Dance (Sony Music, 2019)After the album’s initial taste of “The Goal”, “Happens To The Heart” is the first official single from the remarkable new album Thanks For The Dance, an unexpected harvest of new songs from the master, Leonard Cohen.

Jaakko Eino Kalevi – Dissolution (Weird World, 2019) — “Just as a drop of ink dissolves in a glass of water, it is said that life on Earth began in this way. It’s impossible to become that drop again. Life on Earth is a mystery — it’s a story of dissolution.” These are the wise words from acclaimed Finnish synth-pop weirdo Jaakko Eino Kalevi, when prompted to speak on the title of his latest release. Dissolution marks a completely new episode in Kalevi’s never-ending cosmic voyage, one that is explorative, funky and ultimately quite memorable.

Avram Fefer Quartet – Testament (Clean Feed Records, 2019) — Avram Fefer has been part of the New York jazz scene for a quarter century, over which he played with illustrious figures such as Archie Shepp, Sunny Murray, and Roy Campbell, among others. His second outing on Clean Feed, Testament, is a very personal statement comprising eight exciting pieces, which apart from one of them, are culled from his self-penned repertoire. Despite five of them have been previously recorded, they appear here with an exceptional new instrumentation thanks to a fresh partnership with guitarist Marc Ribot, with whom Fefer had played before but never recorded. The other two elements of the quartet on display, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Chad Taylor, are also members of Fefer’s stellar trio and their musical excellence and rapport are pretty much in evidence throughout.

VA — Come On Up To The House_ Women Sing Waits (Dualtone Music Group, 2019) — The truest testament to a song’s power is how it plays with others. Songs written by the performer are more likely to land in the singer’s stylistic and vocal wheelhouse; take away that crutch to witness the song’s true strength and character. So while Tom Waits’ genius has been beyond dispute for at least a quarter-century, hearing his songs performed by the dozen female artists of “Come On Up to the House: Women Sing Waits” casts new light on their brilliance.

Coma – Voyage Voyage (City Slang, 2019) — first release for City Slang after a run on Kompakt that lasted the better part of a decade, Voyage Voyage is the Cologne duo’s most pop-minded, indie-friendly work yet, placing a greater emphasis on vocal hooks and rock instrumentation. While there are plenty of vibrant synth sequences and shuffling tech-house rhythms, the electronic elements are generally stripped down to the basics and combined with bass guitars and live drums, with plenty of space for the duo’s introspective lyrics. Less extroverted than a band like Hot Chip, Coma express a similar level of sincerity on tunes like the simmering, midtempo lament “A-Train.” The slow-burning but effervescent “Bits and Pieces” is the centerpiece, with its calmly transcendent synths and anxious yet fearless vocals carrying a very New Order type of atmosphere. The shorter “Dream Sequence” and “Minor Matters” are two of the more abstract cuts, with manipulated vocals floating in gauzy sonics, but “Sparkle” has a more straightforward, surging beat, peaking with a wave of prickly analog synths. The album concludes with the taut new wave of “..,” which manages to briskly convey feelings of apprehension and uncertainty (“I can’t explain what’s on my mind”). Retaining the dancefloor energy of their previous releases while delving deeper into personal reflections, Voyage Voyage marks Coma’s evolution into a more focused dance-pop group.

Jack Peñate — After You (XL Recordings Ltd, 2019) — Following two albums of generally bouncy, soul-inflected indie pop that looked to ’80s movements such as the 2-Tone ska revival, sophisti-pop, and jangle pop for inspiration (2007’s Matinee and 2009’s Everything Is New), Londoner Jack Peñate decided to take a deep dive into the recording and production end of things in order to, as he saw it, better express his songwriting. No less than ten years and, per Peñate, over a thousand songs later, he re-emerges with After You.

Piers Faccini – Hear My Voice [EP] (2019) — In 2018, Piers Faccini came up with the idea of releasing an EP vinyl series for his label, Beating Drum, in order to champion the kind of eclectic and talented artists the label meets and seeks out for their productions. The EP collection called, HEAR MY VOICE, began with three distinct and original voices from around the world, the Neapolitan songwriter, GNUT, New Zealand songstress, TUi MAMAKI and the Trinidadian poet and singer, Roger Robinson under his Folk alias, HORSEDREAMER.
For the fourth EP in the collection and wishing to highlight the series more, PIERS FACCINI decided to release one of his own.

Charlie Megira – Tomorrow’s Gone (Numero Group, 2019) — Even in this age of near-total Internet accessibility, Charlie Megira is a modern mystery. A casual search turns up little aside from a few cryptic articles. His brief career unfolded during a changing of the guard in the music industry, opening on the death of the compact disc and ending just prior to Spotify’s IPO. For an artist like Megira, living far away from a major music outpost, there was more chaos than structure for his recordings to exist and find an audience. This collection is the first attempt at putting the pieces together, compiling a life’s work of an artist whose spark almost shined unto the world.

Blood Warrior — Animal Hides (Ernest Jenning Record, 2019) — Animal Hides is the third album by Blood Warrior. It’s a collection of songs affected by the anxieties and securities of these times, documented by two friends in their late thirties, Joey Weiss and Greg Jamie (O’Death). Recorded onto tape at Joey Weiss’ studio in the Hudson Valley, Animal Hides was mixed and mastered by Kevin McMahon (Swans, The Walkman, Real Estate) and is being released by Ernest Jenning Record Co. (who also released the band’s 2010 debut) on November 15th, 2019.

Marconi Union — Dead Air (Just Music, 2019) — Dead Air is Marconi Union’s tenth studio album of a career that began in 2002. Starting with the following year’s Under Wires And Searchlights, they’ve created an explorative body of instrumental work that’s shifted between electronica, dub, minimalism, avant-jazz and ambient music. Along the way they’ve collaborated with the likes of Jah Wobble, remixed Max Richter and Vök and provided soundtracks for art installations and other visual media. They’ve also had their own music remixed by Biosphere and Japan’s Steve Jansen, among others.

VA – Mogadisco: Dancing Mogadishu (Somalia 1972-1991) (Analog Africa, 2019) — After being blown away by a few tunes – probably just as you will be after listening to this — Samy Ben Redjeb travelled to the infamous capital city of Somalia in November of 2016, making Analog Africa the first music label to set foot in Mogadishu.

Will Samson – Paralanguage (Wichita Recordings, 2019) — British musician Will Samson straddles a blurred line between ambient electronic composition and organic acoustic songwriting, occasionally falling deeper into one territory or another over his various albums, EPs, and collaborations. Not unlike the pastoral chamber pop of American artist S. Carey, Samson’s glacial soundscapes feel deeply connected to the wonders of the natural world. After recording for a variety of European labels, he makes his debut for U.K. indie Wichita Recordings with Paralanguage, his fifth proper solo outing.

El Wali — Tiris (Sahel Sounds, 2019) — An amazing and rare studio recording of 1990s Polisario music! The album is a standout example of the Sahrawi political folk style that mixes traditional modes with Western scales and instrumentation. response vocals, The repertoire of El Wali is fiery and inspirational, a call to arms — with national anthems, celebrations of political anniversaries, and religious pleas for peace, with call and response duets, backed with a synthesizer, programmed drums, and electric guitar.

Marissa Nadler And Stephen Brodsky – In The Air Tonight / More Than Words (Single, Collaboration, 2019) — The duo behind ‘Droneflower’ covers the classic songs by Phil Collins and Extreme.

Coloray — Real Life Cinema (Atomnation, 2019) — A dance floor effective tapestry from raw layers of vocally propelled new wave, post-punk and synth pop. As the newly-founded project by Tilburg-based DJ, producer and graphic designer, Raynor de Groot, Coloray infuses powerful, unpolished sound aesthetics with relentless energy. After cutting his teeth on both the Dutch and international DJ circuit, and nurturing his production skills as member of the Tunnelvisions duo, the project translates an inwards desire to create and explore off the beaten path, and does so with a compelling ‘80s attitude.

Electric Litany – Under A Common Sky (Inner Ear, 2019) — Under A Common Sky’ is the third album from London based four-piece Electric Litany. The 9 tracks were written in a beach house in Corfu during the summer of 2017 before being recorded at Fish Factory, North London by producer George Botis. It is Electric Litany’s most ambitious recording to date. Inspired not only by the nocturnal nature of the island but also the humanitarian crisis in which we find ourselves.

VA – Afro Exotique: Adventures in the Leftfield, Africa 1972-82 (Africa Seven, 2019) — The influence of both traditional and contemporary African music on Funk and Disco, from the late 60’s to the early 80’s, has rightly become ever more widely recognised over the last 30 plus years. Africa Seven has been lucky enough to source some of the better music that West Africa produced during that halcyon period via a spread of seminal label catalogues. But Afro-Exotique (Vol 1) looks beyond Funk and Disco and their Afrobeat / Highlife progenitors, exploring spaces in between and outside these established genres.

Moments from the mind, always in motion. Forgotten Hello Meteor music from 2008-Present… “If one is but secure at the foundation, he will not be pained by departure from minor details or affairs that are contrary to expectation. But in the end, the details of a matter are important. The right and wrong of one’s way of doing things are found in trivial matters.” ― Yamamoto Tsunetomo

Daniel Knox – I Had A Wonderful Time [EP] (2019) — Knox, a self-taught pianist who spends late nights walking the streets of Chicago taking pictures, has just released his latest disc, I Had A Wonderful Time. Clocking in at 31 minutes it’s hard to call the four songs an E.P. The title comes from the habit Knox had of going to school dressed as Groucho Marx. “I used to go to school dressed as Groucho Marx…I demanded my classmates call me Groucho Knox…Groucho Marx once said, “I’ve had a wonderful time but this wasn’t it.” It’s not meant sarcastically though, not by me.”

Tempers – Private Life (Dais Records, 2019) — New York based duo Tempers, comprised of Jasmine Golestaneh and Eddie Cooper, have been diligently carving out their own unique niche within dark indie, electronica and synth-pop circles since their formation. After a series of digital singles in 2013, Tempers began solidifying their singular identity of rigorous electronic production blended with instinctual, unleashed vocals. Following well received tours in Europe and the United States, Tempers saw the release of their debut album entitled Services, released in Germany via the highly regarded cult imprint Aufnahme + Wiedergabe and quickly became a staple in the synth-pop/post punk scenes in both the States and in Europe. Since the release of Services, Tempers have regularly appeared at a number of international festivals and venues, including Test Pressing Festival and Berghain to name a few, and ambitiously created a concept album entitled Junkspace in 2018, in collaboration with famed architect Rem Koolhaas, about the deconstructed banality and overlooked grace of 20th century shopping mall culture.

Matthew Ryan – Fallen Ash And Embers [EP] (2019) — Matthew Ryan continues to be one of the few artists creating great music out of our strange historical moment, struggling to provide us with understanding, catharsis, faith, hope, and beauty out of unsettling times. Now, he is releasing a new EP, Fallen Ash & Embers. As Ryan explains on his website, the EP is “inspired by the moment we’re in, but not tied to. It’s more interested in who we’ll be after this fever breaks.”
